6.454 - Graduate Seminar in Area I - Fall 2007
Course Information Guidelines Topics Schedule

Participants and Auditors

The course strives to bring together a small group of participants with strong backgrounds in Area I, in an informal atmosphere that encourages discussions. To maintain the cordial setting, we encourage invitees and new attendees to be introduced or introduce themselves.

All participants, including auditors, are expected to come prepared to each session, either by prior expertise in the topic, or by having read the relevant papers. All needed material will be regularly posted on this site ahead of time.

Consistent attendance, while not mandatory, is expected of members of the class. Participants should plan to attend, roughly, at least three quarters of all sessions.

Leaders / Presenters

Presenting a broad view of your topic is preferred over the details of a single result. For instance, it is important to emphasize the intuitions and basic structure of theorems, rather than the specifics of their proofs.

Aside from leading the discussion on the day of your presentation, your responsibilities are as follows:

  • Papers: At least one week ahead, provide electronic copies of all key papers, or links thereof, to the student organizers.
  • Summary: By Monday of the presentation week, provide an electronic summary of your discussion/presentation to the student organizers. Preferably, prepare your document in LaTeX, using the following template.

Your material will be promptly posted on this site. The deadlines are meant to give the other participants enough time to prepare.
