Hi everyone, Welcome to the HST.582J/6.555J/16.456J mailing list. This list, along with the course web site, will be your main sources of up-to-date announcements and course information outside of Tuesday/Thursday lectures. WEB SITE: The course web site can be found at http://web.mit.edu/6.555/www/. This web site will be used extensively throughout the semester, so feel free to bookmark it now. Note that if you are receiving this email on an MIT Athena account, you should now have access to the "Materials" section, and should be able to download all posted materials, provided you have MIT certificates installed on your computer. MATLAB TUTORIAL (this Friday, 11:00am-12:30pm): This Friday is an optional MATLAB tutorial for those students who do not have extensive MATLAB experience. This tutorial will be held in room 14-0637 (in the basement near Hayden library) this Friday, 2/8, from 11:00am to 12:30pm. I will be sending out a MATLAB self-test shortly in a separate email. If you are unable to successfully complete this self-test within roughly 10 minutes, then you are strongly encouraged to attend this Friday's tutorial. LABORATORIES As Julie mentioned in class, the primary difference between this course and other signal processing courses offered at MIT / Harvard is the practical hands-on experience you will gain through weekly laboratories. We hope that this course will help you bridge the gap between signal processing theory and application, and will provide you with a strong applied foundation, whether you are working in a research environment or are preparing for a career in industry. You are encouraged to work with lab partners, but in some cases it is acceptable for you to work alone. But please note that regardless whether you work in collaboration or individually, you must write up all labs ON YOUR OWN-- no collaborations are allowed on the writeups themselves. LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS Everyone has received their first laboratory choice, be it Wednesday or Friday. We will work out pairing up lab partners in your first lab. Note that Lab 1 starts next week. FEEDBACK The teaching staff of HST.582J/6.555J are receptive to your comments and suggestions. Please don't hesitate to send us any feedback you may have. Thanks, Bo
