6.893 Architecture of Database Systems

Assignment 4, due April 27, 2002

Sketch modifications to Gamma that would support possible iron configurations that might occur in the near future, including:
  1. the possibility of ganging together 1000 to 10,000 nodes on some sort of a high speed LAN. Hence, you need to scale Gamma to this level of CPU/memory nodes.
  2. the possibility of supporting a 10 Pbyte data base on 10,000 drives, each 1Tbyte in size. Hence, you need to scale Gamma to 10,000 disk drives.
  3. the likelihood of 1Tbyte drives will mean that a conventional data base of (say) 10 Tbytes can be stored on only 10 drives. Hence, you need to scale Gamma to provide very high performance for conventional size DBMSs.
