The Final Write-Up

Project Summary

Here is the final take on Sasha's Metronome. I created two applets. The first is an auditory metronome. The second is a graphical metronome. The auditory metronome, much to my dismay, does not play any sound. I believe the cause of this to be that the .au file was corrupted when I ftp'ed it to Athena. The graphical metronome works just fine. Of course, like any student in a seminar entitled "The World Wide Wed and Other Advancing Technologies", I created a project for one of the more modern browsers (not Netscape 1.1). I figured this would be an okay assumption, considering the purpose of the seminar. According to my advisors, I was very wrong and I shall be eternally punished for making such assumptions. Better luck next time.

The project was actually fun, believe it or not. I enjoy writing useless little Java applets, especially since I have been writing seemingly useless Java programs all semester. I felt as if I was further sharpening my unpractical programming skills. No, really, it is always fun to create a nifty little tool. Although, again, according to my advisors, I was wrong in assuming that my tool is actually useful. After all, I shouldn't create a tool that only a certain population of, say musicians with a modern web browser, can actually utilize.(Then again, I am almost certain that every other project targeted at the mainstream and not a specific group of people... I only bring this up because I felt I was unfairly demeaned when I have my final presentation. It is never pleasant to end a class with, well, an unpleasant attitude.) Another mistake. However, in the event that my metronome stops functioning, I will make full use of my little project.

Course Summary

I enjoyed taking seminar 6A26. I was a bit disappointed at the course content. The seminar rarely discussed advancing technologies. There were legitimate attempts. Unfortunately, I cannot honestly say that I have gained technical information from this seminar. Rather, I gained a new perspective at exploring technology. For example, I have a solid understanding as to why I should not give my credit card number, social security number etc... over the Internet. However, I would have liked to learn how the process of Internet "shopping" actually works. For example, we never talked about what happens (in terms of encryption etc...) when I press the little send button on a form.

The meetings were always interesting. I definitely made one great friend from my seminar group. His name slips me at this time, but I can describe him as a beautiful black dog who loves being rubbed atop the head. He he he. Actually, our seminar meetings were always somewhat "cozy" in the sense that we had both man and man's best friend. They were very relaxed and open, unlike most classes here at MIT.

The Future?

Interesting question. What is the future of the Internet? Better yet, what is the future of Sasha Devore? I don't know the answer to either of these questions. The Internet is a developing technology. I am a developing young adult who has just completed her first semester (almost...) at MIT. Both are becoming more complex and advanced rather exponentially as time passes.
