WELCOME TO THE 7.02 TEACHING LABORATORY

If you have haven't been to the teaching laboratory before, we invite you to take a "virtual tour." We are looking forward to working with you this semester!

The 7.02 teaching lab is located in room 68-074. We are in the basement of Building 68 on the end of the building closest to the BioCafe (food trucks, Main Street). If you walk down the stairs from the first floor, the doors to 68-074 will be right in front of you.

Before entering the lab, be sure you leave any food or drink (including wrappers!) on the benches outside the front doors. There is no food or drink allowed in the teaching lab!

The biology teaching lab consists of a long room with 15 work benches, each assigned a letter (B through P). Each bench contains one or two work stations, and every laboratory group will be assigned a station at which to work. This picture was taken from near bench E, and the door to the warm room is open near bench I.

Another view of the lab, taken from near bench K. The doors to the offices of the laboratory instructors are visible near the clock in this view. The cabinets on the right wall hold supplies like tips and Eppendorf tubes, and benches along this wall are where you'll pick up laboratory reagents each day (we call them "supply benches").

During the semester, you will often need to incubate samples in the "warm room." While the teaching lab has two warm rooms, students will primarily use the one near bench I. As seen in these pictures, the warm room has roller drums for incubating test tubes and shelves for holding Petri plates, etc.

During the course of the semester, you may be asked to store your samples in the "cold room." As seen in this picture, the cold room also holds many temperature sensitive reagents (such as buffers and plates) and equipment (such as a shaker platform).

One of your first "stops" each day in lab will be at the ice machine. You can find the ice machine at the far end of Alcove 4, which is located at the end of the lab nearest Bench P. In this Alcove, you will also find the 65C "hot box" and one of four fume hoods in the laboratory (the others are in Alcoves 1, 2, and 3).
