| Tutoring Record for Fourth Period |
|
|
|
Tutoring Period 4 ended last Wednesday,
December 11, and most of you have handed in your
tutoring records for this period already.
However, I realized today that I never posted a
request or a deadline for these records. If you
have not already handed yours in, then please
turn in your tutoring record by tomorrow, Monday
December 16, by 5:30 pm. There will be an
envelope taped outside the tutoring room 4-334
B-1 where these forms should be deposited.
Thank you very much. And, once again, best
wishes for success on the final exam.

| Improved Web Postings: |
|
|
|
The formula sheet for this year's Final Exam is now posted
on the Exams page. It is
identical to last year's. As always, you do not need to
memorize these equations, but you should make sure that
you understand them.
In addition, the posting of last year's
Final Exam has been improved in format, although there
is no change in content. The blank pages have now been
removed from the exam files, and the solutions files have
been replaced by files that were scanned at higher
resolution (300 dpi instead of 200 dpi). Although the new
files have more than twice as many pixels, they are
smaller than the earlier files due to better compression.

61.6, with a standard deviation of 14.3. On average,
the students who took both exams did better on Make-up
Exam 3 than they did on Exam 3 by a whopping 18.4%.

Final Exam |
|
|
|
The final exam, as you probably know, will take place this
coming Monday, December 16, from 9:00 am until noon in Johnson.
|
| |
Review Sessions |
|
|
| |
To help you study for the final, there will be
two review sessions:
Friday, 3 - 5 pm, 26-100, with Vishesh Khemani
This session will review the material that was covered on
Exams 1 and 2.
Saturday, 3 - 5 pm, 26-100, with Brad Plaster
This session will review the material that was covered on
Exam 3, and since Exam 3.
Note: these instructors are not, alas, being paid anything
extra for doing these review sessions, so please give them
an appreciative round of applause at the end.

Tutoring |
|
|
| |
The tutors will be available to answer your questions through
Sunday, December 15, on the normal tutoring schedule. The last

Previous Final Exams on the Web |
|
|
| |
The exams for Fall 1994 through Fall 2000, with their solutions,
are all posted on the 8.01 website. Start with Previous
Years, and then choose the year that you want. Note that
1994 - 1997 are all available through the 1998 website. Once
you have reached the web page for the year of your choice, then
follow the menus for that year to find the final exam. If you
can't find it, then let me know. The final exam for 2001 is
not available yet, but will be soon. I am still waiting for
the solutions to be written, and I will notify you by email
when it is ready. |
| |
Formula Sheet for the Final Exam |
|
|
| |
You can find last year's formula sheet on the Fall
2001 website. This year's will probably be identical, and
will be posted soon. |
| |
Web Posting of Grades, Questions about Grades |
|
|
| |
Your grades through Make-up Exam 3 are posted on the 8.01
website. The site will be updated later to include tutoring
credit for Period 4, as well as your homework and recitation
quiz averages. (As was announced at the beginning of the course,
the recitation quiz grades will be "renormalized"
in an effort to compensate for the differences between the quizzes
and grading styles of the different instructors in the course.
We will follow the same formula as was used last year, which
is described here.)
I expect that your final course grades, including your final
exam, final numerical average, and final letter grade, will
be posted by Monday December 23.
If you have questions about your grades, you should see
your recitation instructor if possible. I know that Maria
Chan is leaving town quickly, but as far as I know the other
recitation instructors will continue to be available. If you
cannot reach your recitation instructor, then let me know
what the problem is, and I will try to get it resolved. I
will have an office hour tomorrow, Friday December 13, from
2:00 - 3:00 pm, to discuss any questions that you might have.
My office is 6-209.
Best wishes to all of you, and I hope that you all ace the
final!

| Tutoring Credit
|
|
|
|
|
The fourth tutoring period began yesterday (Sunday, November
24). You should turn in your tutoring record for Period 3 by
next Wednesday (November 27) at 4 pm. There is an envelope taped
outside the tutoring room 4-334 B-1 where these forms should
be deposited.
From November 24 - December 11, all students who scored
below the target score of 65 on Exam 3 will receive 1 extra
point per 25-minute tutoring session, up to a limit of 2 per
week, to be added to your score on Exam 3. You can attend
as many tutoring sessions as you want, but you will receive
credit for only the first two each week. These tutoring credit
points can be used to bring your score on Exam 3 up to the
target score, but they cannot raise it beyond the target score,
and they cannot be applied to any other exam. For students
who also took Make-up Exam 3, the tutoring points will be
added to the combined score of Exam 3 plus the Make-up, capped
at the target score.
There will be no tutoring on Thursday and Friday, November
28 and 29, due the Thanksgiving holiday. Tutoring will continue
until the Final Exam on December 16, but there will be no
credit given for tutoring after the last day of classes, December
11. [Posted Monday 11/25/02.]

| Make-up Exam 3 Announcement |
|
|
|
Make-up Exam 3 will be given Tuesday evening, December 3,
at 7:30 pm, in Room 26-100. Please note that this is our regular
lecture room, and that it is AFTER Thanksgiving break.
If you cannot attend the Make-up Exam, either due to illness
or to a conflict with a scheduled academic exercise or extracurricular
activity, then you should contact your recitation instructor.
He or she can arrange for you to take an alternative exam
given at 8:30 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. the following morning. In
such cases you are expected to refrain from discussing the
Make-up Exam with your classmates who have already taken it,
since the alternative exam is likely to be similar or identical
to the exam given the previous night. [Posted Sunday 11/24/02.]

| Exam 3 Results |
|
|
|
As was announced in lecture, the average score on Exam 3 was
53.1, with a standard deviation of 15.7. The target score is
65. If your grade was below 49, you should take this as an indication
that on the basis of this exam, you are in danger of not passing.
Your current grade report has been posted on the 8.01 website.
The listings include all Exams and Make-up Exams through Exam
3, as well as the tutoring credit for periods 1 and 2, both
of which are applied to Exam 1.
Just go to the "Grades" page, and click on "HERE" where it
says "To access your grades, click HERE." You will need an
MIT personal certificate to identify yourself. If you have
any trouble accessing the website, you should contact Alan
Guth (guth@ctp.mit.edu).
If you have questions about the grades themselves, you should
start by contacting your recitation instructor. [Posted Wednesday,

|
|
|
The exam covers all the material from Chapters 8 through 10
of the Study Guide, and the corresponding sections in the Giancoli
textbook (which were listed in Problem Sets 6 and 7). If you
can do all the problems in the Study Guide, you will have no
difficulty with the exam. The exam will include at least one
problem that is at most a slight modification of a problem or
part of a problem indicated by "DO" or "STUDY"
on Problem Sets 6 or 7.
The formula sheet that you will be given during the exam
has been posted on the Exams page.
You do not need to memorize these equations, but you should
make sure that you understand them. The formula sheet includes
the table of moments of inertia from the Study Guide (p. 277).
On the Previous Years page, the
links to Exam 3 from previous years have been expanded to
include 2001. There are links to prior years' web pages for

| Make-up Exam 2 Results |
|
|
|
The average score on Make-up Exam 2 was 60.5. On average,
the students who took both exams did better on Make-up Exam
2 than they did on Exam 2 by 5.8 points.
Apparently the average score on Make-up Exam 1 was never
posted on the website. Apologies about that. The average score
was 68.7. On average, the students who took both exams did
better on Make-up Exam 1 than they did on Exam 1 by a whopping
28.1 points. [Posted Wednesday, 11/6/02.]

| Clarification of Tutoring Credit |
|
|
|
Apparently there has been some confusion about how tutoring
credit can be used. The tutoring record sheets stated clearly
that you can use tutoring credit earned during the second period
to bring up your grade on Exam 1 to the target score (65), but
not above the target score. Some people did not realize, however,
that this was intended to mean that you can use tutoring credit
from the second period only for this purpose it cannot
be applied to Exam 2. Similarly, tutoring credit for the third
period can be used only to bring your score on Exam 2 up to
the target score (70). It cannot bring your score on Exam 2
above the target score, and it cannot be applied to any other
exam.
Even some of the 8.01 staff were confused on this issue,
so unfortunately some students were given incorrect information.
For those students who were told that tutoring credit for
the second period could be applied to Exam 2, we feel obligated
to honor the promise. So, if you have tutoring credit from
the second period which would take you over the target score
for Exam 1, and if you were told that this credit could be
used for Exam 2, then please send me an email and I will arrange
for that to happen.
I apologize for the confusion, and I will try to make sure
in the future that the messages are clear and that all of
the 8.01 staff knows about them.
Best wishes,
Alan Guth (guth@ctp.mit.edu)

| Clarification of Homework Problem 9D.3 |
|
|
|
Please replace the first paragraph of the question by the
following slightly modified form:
A ruler 31 cm long and 2 cm wide is resting on an air table,
so there is no frictional force acting. You are asked to apply
two 1 N forces to the ruler (in the plane of the air table
no vertical forces allowed!) such that (a) there is
a net force on the ruler, but no net torque about the center
of mass; (b) there is a net torque about the center of mass,
but no net force; (c) there is neither a net force nor a net
torque about the center of mass; (d) there is a net torque
about the center of mass and a net force. In each case,
what will the ruler do?

| Exam 2 Results |
|
|
|
As was announced in lecture, the average score on Exam 2 was
77.3, with a standard deviation of 14. The target
score has been set at 70. If your grade was below 63, you
should take this as an indication that you are in danger of
not passing.
Solutions to the exam are posted under Exams.
Your individual grades have not yet been posted, and they
may not be posted again until after Exam 3. At the beginning
of the course we relied on the web postings so that you could
learn your grades before ADD date, but at this stage the web
postings have low priority. [Posted Tuesday 10/25/02.]
