A World-Class Environment
Target Chemicals

The initial step of this project consisted of identifying the chemicals most commonly used in the MIT Chemistry Department that contribute to hazardous waste based on toxicity, regulations, and volumes used. The approximate volumes of these chemicals as well as the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) Title III listed chemicals, ordered during the 2002-2003 fiscal year, were obtained by analyzing purchasing data from vendors. The main vendors were VWR and Sigma-Aldrich Company, although purchasing transactions also occur through smaller vendors and separate accounts.
