Research environments are potential sites for a variety of radiation
sources. From lasers, magnets, and radars on the non-ionizing end
of the radiation spectrum, to analytical X-ray machines, radioactive
materials, accelerators, and irradiators in the ionizing radiation
region, there is potential for exposure to radiation. There is also
a need for a program of recognition, evaluation, and control to
ensure a safe working environment.
The EHS Office helps individuals and departments navigate the unique
challenges posed by these highly regulated tools and materials.
We collaborate with MIT faculty investigators in developing their
research protocols, registering their research, and obtaining regulatory
approvals. We centrally receive and distribute licensed radioactive
material, review proposed uses of radiation sources, and monitor
workers for potential exposure. We also provide services that include
radioactive waste collection and management, survey instrument calibration,
and laboratory surveys and inspections.
