Strobe Project Lab is a 12-credit laboratory course that satisfies both the Institute and the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science lab requirements. It is taught in both spring and fall semesters by Dr. Jim Bales.

For the first six weeks of the course, students carry out laboratory assignments using a variety of high-speed imaging techniques, including the stroboscope, synchronized single flash, multiflash, and high speed video. At the end of this time, each of the four-person laboratory groups chooses an experimental research project that they will carry out during the second half of the term, using any or all of the techniques they have learned in the first half.

The course can only accommodate 24 students per term, and demand often exceeds that. A selection process is performed from the students who come for the first class meeting.
