Americans have a very jaded view of their government, especially
after the recent scandal with President Clinton. Do you trust
that the French government has your best interest in mind? Do
you have a good or a bad view of your President?

En France, les gens tiennent beaucoup moins que les Americains
a connaitre la vie privee de leur president. Par exemple, Francois
Mitterrand avait reconnu une fille qu'il avait eu d'une relation
extra-conjugale sans que cela provoque un Monicagate. Le president
Jacques Chirac beneficie a l'heure actuelle d'une cote de popularite
de 50 a 60%. Une particularite de son mandat, nous sommes en cohabitation:
cela signifie que le president et les ministres qui l'entourent
n'appartiennent pas au meme parti politique. Comment se fait il
qu'une affaire qui a mes yeux apparait un peu "tiree par
les cheveux" (apres tout qui a prouve que Monica n'etait
pas consentante?)ait pris une telle ampleur? Comment ne pas penser
que ce sont les adversaires de Clinton qui ont accentue l'affaire
au point de donner ce qu'on a connu? Que Monica a ete influencee,
notamment par l'appat du gain? Pensez vous vraiment que le president
des Etats Unis n'a pas le droit a sa vie privee? Les Americains
se sont-ils preoccupes de ce qu'a ressenti sa femme: humiliee
au niveau mondial et de l'aspect ridicule que cette affaire a
pu avoir depuis l'Europe? Je pense qu'un president doit plus etre
juge pour ses competences que pour sa vie privee. Qu'en pensez-vous?
N'avez vous pas le sentiment qu'aux Etats-Unis, il existe toujours
quelqu'un qui veut prendre votre place et surtout sera pret a
tout pour ca? Si oui, comment le vivez vous?
Vu depuis la France, votre président parait plus sympathique et plus humain depuis le scandale. En effet, on a vu l'homme qui se cachait derriere le president.
Chez nous, le president a commis une grosse erreur politique ( il a dissous l'assemblée nationale de manière anticipée) il y 2 ans ce qui l'a mis en position de faiblesse. Il n'a pour ainsi dire aucun pouvoir depuis car il est en oppositon avec le gouvernement et l'assemblée nationale. On n'a donc finalement qu'une impression presque de pitié par rapport à l'impuissance de notre président. Il est juste bon maintenant pour représenter le coté commercial de la France à l'étranger. En effet, le gouvernement francais actuel est tres actif (que l'on l'apprécie ou non) ce qui ecrase encore plus le role du president.
En revanche, j'aimerais connaitre l'importance d'Hilary Clinton
sur la politique du président Clinton?
There are many things I could say about Presiden Clinton. To a certain extent, I think his private life should be kept private. At the same time, I think the president has an obligation to the US to have a certain amount of restraint. As former president Franklin Roosevelt said, the president is the moral and spiritual leader of the nation. In theory, part of the reason for the decline of American society is due to the decline of the family and the marital bonds. By condoning infidelity, many times, Clinton shows a lack of respect and caring for the American people.
Is Mitterand's illegitamate daughter a sign of respectable
male virility or immoral shame?
As Fabrice and others have said, French in particular and Europeans
in general are less interested than Americans in details of the
private lives of their political leaders. Is it because Europeans
are less inclined to use scandals as political weapons? Or is
it because Europeans are more "liberal" or "progressive"
in their attitude towards sexual conduct? I remember reading in
the news that a member of the Italian parliament was a former
porn star. I don't think such a thing can happen here because
the public would never accept it. (There's a former wrestler who
became a state governor and look at all the brouhaha that had
generated.) Or is it because in general Europeans are less "nosy"
than Americans in the private lives of other people? On this last
issue, I don't think there is much distinction between Americans
and Europeans. Unfortunately, I don't think that anyone is immune
from sensationalism. Over here, we've got Jerry Springer. Over
there, there're allegations that paparazzi eager for a photo precipitated
the accident that killed Prince Diana in Paris.
