The Glass Lab shares room 4-003, located in the basement of MIT's infinite corridor, with a blacksmithing workshop. The room not only contains the Glass Lab's three furnaces, three annealers, two benches and one marver, but also three forges, three anvils, and 400 pounds of coal. The fluid motions and soft coaxing of glassblowing are juxtaposed with the harsh banging and forcing of metal at the forge. Coal dusk gathers on the marver and the clanging of metal can be heard down the hall as the blacksmithers make everything from sculpture to coat rack to harpoon.
