January Scholars in France

MIT's Foreign Languages and Literatures administers the annual January Scholars in France program. This French cultural immersion program (non-credit, all expenses paid) gives MIT undergraduate students a tutored immersion in Paris, focusing on French arts, letters, theatre, and history.

In creating this program, the section's objective was to give especially motivated students an enlightening and yet very different addition to their MIT education. Activities have included such events as attending plays, movies, concerts and operas, viewing permanent and special exhibits at art and history museums, exploring hidden places in Paris as well as the better known ones, attending public and university-based lectures on cultural issues, and meeting French people. Students meet on a regular basis with the program director for group discussion and reflection on the works and events explored.

Students are chosen each Fall through a competitive application process. Students must have completed, or be in the process of completing, one subject above French IV. Declared French majors and minors are given special consideration. Applications, deadlines, and additional information can be found on the application page.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit the web sites established by each year's participants.
