The Institute receives financial support from both the McGovern Foundation and MIT. The Board of Directors contains representatives appointed by the McGovern family and MIT, as well as renowned scientists outside of MIT. The McGovern Institute is also guided by a distinguished Scientific Advisory Board composed of some of the world's most prominent neurobiologists. The Institute operates as a full member of the MIT community, conforming to all MIT policies regarding faculty, students, staff, and personnel. All faculty appointments to the McGovern Institute are approved by MIT, and all faculty members have appointments in MIT departments. The McGovern Institute's novel administrative structure accomplishes twin objectives of the institute: developing an intensive program of advanced research within its walls, as well as engaging and enhancing the neuroscience community at MIT.
Administration
The Director of the McGovern Institute is Robert Desimone, an internationally known neuropsychologist. Dr. Desimone's research explores the brain mechanisms underlying attention, memory and executive control. Prior to joining the McGovern Institute, he directed the NIMH Intramural Research Program, the largest mental health research center in the world.
