Joining the Polz Lab

Graduate studies

The Polz lab accepts roughly 1 to 2 Ph.D. students per year either through the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Graduate Program in Microbiology or through the Joint Program in Biological Oceanography with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (please follow the links for detailed information on how to apply to either program). Please note that it is best to apply through more than one avenue since slots may be limited by program constraints.

In your application, please state explicitly that you would like to join the Polz lab and explain your motivation and background. Applicants with strong interest/background in ecology, evolution, genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry and molecular biology are especially encouraged. Although not necessary for acceptance, we strongly encourage application for externally funded fellowship through NSF or EPA.

Postdoctoral studies

We encourage applications from candidates with work experience in fields ranging from ecology, evolution, genomics, bioinformatics, biochemistry and molecular biology. Because we have only limited funds available for postdoctoral positions applicants are encouraged to look for external funding opportunities. Please also note that the Polz lab is not engaged in research related to waste water treatment and bioremediation of environmental contaminants.
