Overview
A session is an open SAP window. You can open several sessions and work on a system task in each session just as you can work with multiple open windows in other software applications. By opening multiple sessions in SAP, you can work in Session 1, while referencing relevant information in Session 2. You can have up to six sessions open at the same time, but it is strongly recommended that you have no more than two sessions open at a time to avoid an unnecessary load on system resources.

Creating a New Session
You can open a new session from any screen in the SAP system. Follow the menu path or enter the transaction code as shown below:

Menu Path:

System>>Create session

Transaction Code:

/o + transaction code of desired system task in the new session, such as /ome51.

Note

On a PC you can click on the Create a new session button Create a new session button on the Toolbar.

A new window opens up. The new session becomes the active one until you click on another open session. The session number (2) in the example, is displayed in parentheses to the right of the system name in the Status Bar of each screen.

Moving Among Sessions
Click on any part of the other window to move to another session. The window you selected becomes the active session and is displayed on top.

On a PC:
There is a keyboard shortcut available to switch sessions. Press and hold the Alt key, then press the Tab key.

Tip

To conserve system resources, minimize the session you are not using. On a Mac, click the button in the upper right corner of the Mac screen. On a PC, click the Minimize button in the upper right corner of the Windows screen. If the buttons are not displayed on your PC, click the screen header on the top of the screen.

Closing a Session
You can close open sessions in several ways:

  • Follow the menu path: System >> End session.
  • On a Mac, click the Control/Close box (empty box) on the left of the screen header. On a PC, click the Close button (box containing an x) on the upper right of the Windows screen.

Result: The window closes and you return to the previous session.
