Getting Started
Requirements for Using SAP

Before using SAP, you should check the requirements listed below to find out what software, access privileges, and/or training you will need.

SAP Requirements

How to obtain information

Familiarity with your computer platform

If you are not sure whether you need computer training on basic computer skills, you can use the Information Systems (IS) "Core Computing Skills" Self-Assessment Tools on the Web.

Familiarity with a web browser

For more information on core skills courses, visit the IS Computer Training web site or contact IS Training at x3-7685.

Apple Macintosh or Windows PC

For information on recommended hardware, see IS Supported Products.

Connection to MIT Network

Call the Computing Help Desk to request a network connection at x 3-1101 (Macintosh) or x 3-1102 (PC). On the Web, visit MITnet Information and Services.

SAPgui software installed on your computer

You can get the SAPgui software from the SAP for MIT page.

If you need help installing the SAPgui on your machine, contact your local IT support person (if your department has one) or the Business Liaison Team at business-help@mit.edu or 252-1177.

To find out if you have a local IT support person, go to Departmental Support Providers.

Network ID (aka Kerberos Principal, Kerberos ID, or Athena ID)

If you use Eudora for electronic mail or use Athena, you have a Kerberos network ID. However, some areas at MIT have e-mail systems that do not use the Kerberos protocol and users in these areas need to get a Kerberos userid in order to access SAP. For example, if your ID resembles this: jones@isis.mit.edu, you need a Kerberos ID such as khutchin@mit.edu.

All MIT staff are eligible to receive Kerberos userids. You can obtain a new account via the Athena Environment Registration web site.

SAP Profile. .

This determines what tasks you can perform and what MIT cost objects you can access. Contact your department's SAP Primary Authorizers to request SAP access. For a list, go to the SAP for MIT page and pick "Primary Authorizers."

SAP Training and Documentation

To find out which courses are available on SAP and to register for them, go to the SAP Training page.

You can obtain documentation on SAP functionality from the SAP Documentation page, including a Basic Skills Self-Study if you are just beginning to use SAP.
