Jobs Assistant Dean, Director of Fraternities,
Sororities, and Living Groups
Basic Function and Responsibility
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Life Programs, the
Assistant Dean and Director of Fraternities, Sororities, and
Living Groups (FSILGs) leads a team of professionals responsible
for providing Institute advice, direction, and support to FSILGs
as a component of MIT's educational mission.
As a skilled professional, the Assistant Dean will integrate
FSILG program and operational development within the larger
contexts of a residential system and MIT student development
curriculum. The Assistant Dean will also represent the Institute
to government and private organizations in Boston, Cambridge
and nationwide. In addition, the Assistant Dean will be responsible
for initiating, revising, interpreting, and maintaining policies
and procedures related to FSILG life at MIT.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops, under the direction of the SLP leadership team,
a strategic plan for FSILGs that supports both the educational
mission of MIT and the student development curriculum of Student
Life Programs, including the assessment, design, and implementation
of a comprehensive operational and programmatic plan.
- Provides oversight and direction, in conjunction with other
staff, and FSILG House Corporations, to a system of live-in
resident advisors that serve as a link between the Corporations,
the residents, and MIT.
- Advises individual undergraduate and alumni FSILG officers
and committees to assist them in accomplishing their goals
in the context of the mission of the Institute.
- Supports student and alumni governance processes by participating
in ongoing meetings and initiatives, including the Association
of Independent Living Groups (AILG), the Independence Resource
Development Fund (IRDF), the Interfraternity Council (IFC),
the Living Group Council (LGC), and the Panhellenic Council.
- In conjunction with other SLP staff, oversees the development
of a comprehensive, ongoing leadership training program for
FSILG leaders, including issues of health and wellness, safety
and security, and community service. Works with student leaders
to identify the core areas of training.
- Provides outreach, advice, and support to assist in the
development of traditionally minority fraternities and sororities
at MIT, specifically to the National Pan-Hellenic fraternities
and sororities and the NPHC council.
- Works with faculty, staff, and administrative offices to
encourage collaboration on both curricular and co-curricular
programs in an effort to enhance the overall student experience.
- Develops and maintains effective management procedures and
policies as they apply to FSILG life on campus. Ensures FSILG
compliance with MIT policies and procedures, state and local
laws, and inter/national fraternity and sorority policies.
- Serves as liaison to and builds and maintains productive
relationships with various city regulatory agencies and boards,
neighborhood associations, and nearby colleges and universities,
including representation on the Cambridge Licensee Advisory
Board and the FSILG liaison to the Cambridge License Commission
and the Boston License Commission.
- Serves as FSILG liaison to and works collaboratively with
the Institute offices and departments, including the Campus
Activities Complex, Campus Police, Conference Services, Alumni
Relations, Risk Management, Insurance and Legal Affairs, Safety,
Facilities, the Treasurer, and others as it relates to FSILG
program support, events, contracts, or policies relating to
each.
- Supervises the FSILG advising and support team, consisting
of two Coordinators for Fraternities, Sororities, and Living
Groups, and a Program Assistant.
- Works closely with the SLP staff in the preparation and
implementation of long-range plans in the residential life
and student life programs areas.
- Assists in conflict resolution including service on the
Dean's Office hearing board, as an administrative review officer,
and as a complaint handler for harassment issues. Is available
to mediate complaints between and within MIT students and
organizations and for advising individual students and student
leaders, as appropriate.
- Oversees other projects as directed by the Dean for Student
Life, Director for Residential Life, and/or the Associate
Dean for Student Life Programs.
Supervision Received
Supervision is received primarily from the Associate Dean for
Student Life
Supervision Exercised
Direct supervision is exercised over the two Coordinators and
a Program Assistant
Qualifications
Masters Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel or related
field required. The successful candidate will have 7 to 10 years
of higher education experience with substantial depth and breadth
in Greek Affairs. He or she will be a self-starter, a dedicated
team player, committed to excellence, and possess excellent
verbal and written communication skills. The ability to understand
and work with a diverse and talented group of students is essential.
MIT is seeking an experienced professional with high energy,
a passion for student development, and the demonstrated skill
to balance the interests and needs of students, alumni, FSILG
neighbors, the MIT and FSILG community, and the Institute. Some
evenings and weekend hours are necessary. |
