Jobs Assistant Dean, Public Service Center
Basic Function and Responsibility
Provides Institute support, advice, direction and vision for
the Public Service Center (PSC). Encourages growth and development
of PSC programs, student groups and individuals through increased
awareness of volunteer programs and opportunities. Sets priorities
for the PSC in support of its mission to increase student participation
in public service activities. Works with other Institute departments
and committees (e.g. Steering Committee, Advisory Board) to
further develop policies and programs which support this mission.
Oversees administrative and financial operations of the PSC.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Coordinate CityDays, a volunteer outreach program for MIT
students.
2. Maintain the PSC’s clearinghouse of information regarding
community service activities for individual students and organizations.
Develop and maintain a network of individual and agency contacts
for generating new public service activities at the national,
local and MIT levels. Provide students with information about
available opportunities, and match interested participants with
community needs.
3. Oversee the PSC’s support of volunteer and community
service activities through publicity, transportation, community
awareness and recruiting of student volunteers.
4. Generate funding for PSC programs and Fellowships from alumni/ae,
corporations and foundations in conjunction with the office
of Resource Development and the Alumni/ae Association.
5. Provide leadership and direction in support of the PSC’s
mission to encourage student involvement in public service and
volunteerism. Encourage on-going research of the current trends
and best practices to promote and support this mission.
6. Work with faculty and academic departments to develop public
service opportunities for which students can receive academic
credit or financial fellowships.
7. Maintain the PSC as a resource for the Cambridge/Boston
community to post volunteer opportunities. Serve as a member
of the Board of Directors of several local agencies.
8. Collaborate with faculty, the Office of Government and Community
Relations, and the Office of the President and Provost in planning
and coordinating Institute activities with a community service
component. Serve as a member of the Community Service Fund’s
Board of Directors.
9. Develop and maintain PSC publications and promotional events,
including the Outreach Booklet, bi-annual newsletter, columns
in The Tech, Tech Talk and the Thistle, Public Service Days,
and the Activities Midway. Utilize current technology such as
the World Wide Web to promote PSC programs.
10. Periodically survey the MIT community, particularly with
changing student population, to determine the nature and extent
of participation in public service activities and interest in
developing new opportunities.
11. Serve as MIT’s representative to Campus Compact (the
National Coalition of College and University Presidents Project
for Public and Community Service), Campus Outreach Opportunities
League (COOL), and the Massachusetts Youth Serve Alliance (MYSA).
Establish and maintain informational exchanges with similar
programs at other educational institutions.
12. Financial responsibility and accountability for nine separate
PSC accounts including endowment and fund accounts.
13. Advise individuals and groups of students on initiating,
recruiting and implementing community service programs.
14. Generate national visibility and support for university
service programs. Engage in professional development opportunities
available in the field.
15. Other duties as required.
Contacts Required
Internal communication with the Office of Government and Community
Relations, President’s Office, Academic Departments, Faculty,
Career Services, News Office, Resource Development, Alumni/ae,
other UESA Sections, undergraduate and graduate student groups.
External communication (primarily in Cambridge/Boston community)
including the Mayor’s Office, City Councilors, School
Department, Teachers, Agency Directors, community members, local
newspapers and other media personnel.
Supervision Received
Direct supervision is received from the Associate Dean and Section
Head, Student Life Programs.
Supervision Exercised
Supervision is exercised over the Assistant Director of the
PSC, support staff, and student workers.
Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred, Bachelor’s required.
Five to seven years experience in public service or student
oriented activities in a university setting required. Excellent
interpersonal, organizational, communication, and supervisory
skills are essential. Demonstrated commitment to the promotion
of community service and volunteerism is strongly desired. Ability
to work independently required. Familiarity with MIT student
organizations and undergraduate programs is helpful.
