Jobs Assistant Dean for Student Activities
Basic Function and Responsibility
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Life Programs, the
Assistant Dean for Student Activities leads a team of professionals
responsible for providing Institute support, advice, and direction
to MIT student activities, clubs, and organizations as a component
of MIT’s educational mission.
The Assistant Dean provides direction, vision, and management
to a multifunctional Student Activities Office that offers:
thorough advising for event coordination; a leadership development
program that supports individual and organizational development;
a comprehensive resource center for students and student organizations;
and a mechanism for risk management and enforcement of MIT policies
for student organizations.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
1. Encourages a balanced program of student activities by advising
student leaders and student governments (the UA, ASA, and GSC
specifically) in creating and maintaining a structure of support
for student organizations and their campus events.
2. Facilitates the growth and development of student organizations
by advising them in the planning and implementation of campus
programs and events, and through the promotion of collaboration
within and between groups. Provides targeted support and resources
based on the needs of the organizations.
3. Forms alliances and works collaboratively with other programs
within DSL to provide a comprehensive structure of support for
student organizations within the larger context of an MIT student
development curriculum. Works with the staff of CAC and RLSLP
to research, design, and implement comprehensive, coherent,
consistent long-range plans in areas that impact students and
student organizations.
4. Develops and maintains an activities environment that maximizes
the personal growth potential of students and student leaders.
Oversees the development of a comprehensive, ongoing leadership
training program for MIT student organizations and student leaders,
including the planning and implementation of the LeaderShape
Institute. Works with student leaders to identify the core areas
of training. Provides opportunities to recognize students and
student leaders and celebrate their contributions to Institute
life.
5. Develops and maintains effective management procedures and
policies as they apply to student organizations consistent with
Institute policy, including implementation of the MIT Alcohol
Policy as it relates to student events. Addresses issues/conflicts
as they relate to event policy or procedure.
6. Supervises the Program Coordinator for Student Activities
in working with the ASA recognized groups, Class Councils and
student governments to strengthen the ongoing visibility and
diversity of student-run programs on campus.
7. Oversees the management of the student organization accounting
function. Supervises the Staff Associate for Student Activities
Finances to review auditing and accounting procedures, monitor
expenditures, and manage other issues related to student
organization finances.
8. Serves as primary contact for supplemental funding sources
for student organizations. Manages the Request for Funding Process
for ASA groups. Coordinates the MIT Fund. Advises student organizations
on funding issues in consultation with other Institute offices
and the Staff Associate for Student Activities Finances.
9. Serves as advisor to the Undergraduate Association (UA)
and its standing committees, assists in advising the Graduate
Student Council, and advises the Association of Student Activities
and its member organizations.
10. Supervises the Senior Office Assistant (functionally known
as the, “UA Office Manager”) in consultation with
the Undergraduate Association President.
11. Serves on the Event Review committee. Helps plan and monitor
social programs and activities, parties, dances, concerts, pubs,
and other activities in conjunction with the Campus Activities
Complex, Campus Police, Conference Services and others.
12. Responsible for the oversight of specific Institute programs,
including LeaderShape, Charm School, and Spring Weekend.
13. Works with staff to ensure assessment and evaluation of
the program on a regular basis. Provides avenues for student
input with regards to the direction of the Student Activities
Office and the resources it provides.
Supervision Received
Supervision is received from the Associate Dean for Student
Life Programs.
Supervision Exercised
Direct supervision is exercised over the two Program Coordinators
for Student Activities, the Financial Administrator for Student
Activities Finances, the Financial Assistant and the Program
Assistant.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required, Masters Degree (in Counseling,
Student Personnel, management or related area) strongly preferred.
A minimum of three to five years of progressive experience in
a university setting (preferably in student activities/counseling
area) is required. MIT experience preferred. Demonstrated commitment
to the promotion of a multicultural/inclusive environment is
strongly desired. Strong communication, organizational and management
skills are necessary, as is good judgment and sensitivity in
understanding and relating to students of various backgrounds.
Some night and weekend work is required. |
