Jobs Assistant Director, Public Service
Center
Basic Function and Responsibility
Supports the Public Service Center’s mission to provide
centralized institutional support for student involvement in
community service. Assists the Director with overall planning
and implementing of PSC activities, particularly with direct
oversight of student advising and outreach activities, and with
evaluation of outreach programs in the public schools. Increases
student awareness of and participation in public service activities
by publicizing and promoting PSC activities at MIT as well as
with local agencies, organizations, and with the public schools.
Shares responsibility for the planning of PSC programs, and
supervises assigned student and professional staff. Advises
student groups interested in coordinating community service
programs. Contributes to the development of policies and programs
that support Student Life Programs. Some evening and weekend
hours are necessary.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
I. Program Supervision and Evaluation
Supervises coordinators of PSC programs in all aspects including
recruiting volunteers, training volunteers, collaborating with
appropriate constituencies and handling publicity and logistical
oversight. Responsible for recruiting and training new student
coordinators, supervising the development and maintenance of
program materials, and delegating oversight of specific programs
and coordinators to other professional staff as needed.
Works in conjunction with the Student Employment Office to
oversee the Community Service Work Study Program and the Class
of 1996 Senior Gift Project.
Assists with the development, implementation, collection, and
interpretation of program assessments. Reports on program evaluation
to the Director.
Participates in decisions regarding student requests for funding.
II. Advising
Oversees staff advising to student service organizations, living
groups and individuals in the area of event planning and volunteer
participation. May also advise new groups in the areas of initiating
community service programs, covering issues of recruitment,
fundraising, and training.
Serves as a source of information about Institute policies
and procedures regarding student participation in these public
service activities. Seeks out information regarding public service
opportunities available at the international, national, local,
and MIT community levels. Advises students and members of the
MIT community about appropriate long- and short-term service
opportunities for groups and individuals.
III. Program Development
Assists in maintaining collaborative relationships with the
Cambridge Public Schools and other public education systems,
service programs at peer institutions, community organizations,
other MIT service programs, and student living and service groups.
Creates networking opportunities with potential business partners,
alumni, and national organizations to facilitate partnerships,
acquire expertise, and share information.
Initiates and assists with grant writing, cultivating potential
donors and stewardship events.
Assists the Director in data-gathering projects and prepares
data and reports identifying and describing existing public
service efforts in which MIT students participate, or determining
contact persons at other public service agencies.
Leads the production and distribution of PSC publications.
Assists with the coordination of publications including publicity
for specific programs, the newsletter and office brochures.
Writes, updates or edits draft copies of narrative descriptions
of PSC programs. Drafts or edits press releases, short articles,
and reports.
IV. Office Function
Approves standardized Institute forms such as requisitions,
vouchers, and requests for payment. Provides moderate budgetary
oversight: tracking monthly gift records and assisting the Director
with responses, overseeing general spending and reporting to
the Director regarding conformance to budget plan, overseeing
arrangements for PSC activities and special functions.
Represents office at Institute meetings at which the Assistant
Dean is not present.
Works on special projects or activities as assigned by Assistant
Dean.
Supervision Received
Supervision is received from the Assistant Dean and Director,
Public Service Center.
Supervision Exercised
Supervision exercised over student workers, temporary employees
and over the Administrative Assistant as required by the Assistant
Dean. Will supervise the Outreach Coordinator (position pending).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
Four years direct or related experience. Familiarity with Microsoft
Word, Filemaker Pro and desktop designing software; excellent
organizational and writing skills; flexibility; ability to handle
detail; excellent interpersonal skills; sense of humor and ability
to work under pressure; knowledge of MIT and the Cambridge/Boston
community helpful. Fundraising experience a plus. |
