Coordinator for Fraternities, Sororities,
and Living Groups
Basic Function and Responsibility
Provides primary Institute support, advisement and direction
to MIT's 28 fraternities, particularly in the areas of leadership,
organizational development, and both in-house and community
programming. Works with the 28 fraternities, Resident Advisors,
and Interfraternity Council to strengthen the ongoing viability
of the Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group (FSILG)
community and to ensure the system offers effective and quality
programs that support MIT's educational mission. Contributes
to the development and maintenance of the entire FSILG community
in an effort to maximize the personal growth potential of students
and student leaders and create productive learning environments
for students. In addition, lends support to FSILGs in operational
issues, particularly in the areas of facility maintenance, house
finances, and interaction with municipal regulatory agencies.
Empower fraternity, sorority and living group students and alumni
organizations to responsibly approach issues of risk management
and effective oversight of daily house operations. Contributes
to the development and maintenance of an FSILG community that
maximizes the personal growth potential of student leaders and
creates effective and productive learning environments for individuals
living within the community.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
• Develops and implements, under the direction of the
Assistant Dean, a strategic plan for the development of programs
and student leaders within the FSILG system.
• Assists in the development and implementation of leadership
training programs for FSILG organizations and governments.
• Assist in the advisement the Interfraternity Council
in all area of management, including New Member Programming,
Community Service, and Inter-FSILG Relations.
• Advise the fraternities, sororities, and living groups,
and alumni house corporation officers in areas related to risk
management, academics, programming, building safety, security,
and house operations and management, including policy development
and implementation.
• Provide support and advisement to the Resident Advisor
(Live-In House Director) program including developing RA training,
updating and editing the Resident Advisor Manual and overseeing
RA selection and the Resident Advisor Advisory Board.
• Work with IFC, Resident Advisors, and alumni to develop
innovate and effective programs that improve neighbor relations.
• Monitor compliance of FSILGs to MIT’s policies
and procedures, state, local, federal laws, and inter/national
policies, as well as minimum life safety standards for approved
housing and other Institute policies as they relate to housing
facilities.
• Act as liaison with Facilities, the Department of Housing,
and the Environmental, Health and Safety Office regarding safety
and building system inspections, renovations, new construction,
and maintenance within the FSILG community.
• Coordinate the MIT/AILG property and liability insurance
program. Act as intermediary for participating groups and the
insurance broker.
• Coordinate the acquisition of city lodging house licenses
and building inspections for ILGs.
• Maintain contact with local agencies, services, and
organizations in an effort to improve services provided to and
utilized by individual living groups.
• Develop programs to support and enhance the effectiveness
of fraternity chapter advisors, Alumni House Corporation Advisors,
and Resident Advisors as it relates to house operations and
management.
• Work with the FSILG Advising Team to ensure a diverse
slate of programs and an open, welcome environment for all students
in the FSILG community. Proactively seeks ideas and opportunities
for programs in the FSILGs.
• Work with Residence Life to enable effective collaboration
between FSILGs and residence hall communities and to engage
all FSILGs in promoting campus-wide community.
• Develops relationships with MIT departments and faculty
that will enable improved programming with the FSILGs, including
the Office of Academic Services, Health Education, MIT Medical,
Athletics, and other areas of SLP.
• Is available to mediate complaints between MIT Students
and between and within MIT student organizations. Available
for advising individual students and student leaders, as appropriate.
• Other duties and projects as assigned.
Supervision Received
Direct supervision is received from the Assistant Dean and Director
of Fraternities, Sororities, and Living Groups on an ongoing
basis. Weekly meetings are held, as well as daily problem solving
and issues resolution.
Supervision Exercised
Supervision is exercised over graduate interns and/or student
workers, as appropriate
Qualifications
Bachelors Degree required. Masters Degree in Student Personnel
and/or Higher Education preferred. 1-3 years experience preferred.
Graduate school experience may count as professional experience.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment and
the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing environment is
required. Experience and skills in conflict resolution, leadership
training, public speaking and writing are necessary, as is good
judgment and sensitivity in understanding and relating to students
of various backgrounds. Must possess the ability to articulate
a student development philosophy in a high intensity academic
environment. Knowledge of computer programs required. Must be
both team and service-oriented with the ability to work collaboratively
with students, alumni, administration, and local officials.
Preference will be given to candidates with an appreciation
for the value of the fraternal experience as a component of
the college educational experience. Evenings and weekend hours
are necessary.
