Coordinator for Fraternities, Sororities, and Living Groups

Basic Function and Responsibility
Provides primary Institute support, advisement, and direction to MIT's sororities, and living groups, particularly in the areas of leadership, organizational development, and both in-house and community programming. Works with the five NPC sororities and 5 living groups, Resident Advisors, Panhellenic Council, and Living Group Council to strengthen the ongoing viability of the Fraternity, Sorority, and Independent Living Group (FSILG) community and to ensure the community offers effective and quality programs that support MIT's educational mission. Empower fraternity, sorority, and living group students and alumni organizations to approach issues of risk management and effective oversight. Contributes to the development and maintenance of the entire FSILG community in an effort to maximize the personal growth potential of students and student leaders and create productive learning environments for individuals in the community.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
• Develops and implements, under the direction of the Assistant Dean, a strategic plan for the development of programs and student leaders within the FSILG system.

• Assists in the development and implementation of leadership training programs for FSILG organizations and governments.

• Advises the Panhellenic Association. Supports their programs and long-range planning efforts.

• Advises the Panhellenic Association during NPC Formal Recruitment.

• Advise the fraternities, sororities, and living groups, and alumni advisors in areas of risk management, academics, and programming, including policy development and implementation.

• Monitor compliance of FSILGs to MIT policies and procedures, state, local, federal laws, and inter/national policies.

• Work with Panhellenic Council and Living Group Council, Resident Advisors, and alumni to develop innovative and effective programs that improve neighbor relations.

• Advises the programmatic areas and committees of the Panhellenic and Living Group Councils, including New Member Programming, Community Service, and Inter-FSILG Relations.

• Supports in the advisement of the 37 fraternities, sororities, and living groups at MIT.

• Develops mechanisms for effectively utilizing chapter advisors and Resident Advisors as opportunities to support the development of student leaders and programs.

• Works to provide a quality academic environment within MIT's FSILGs. Encourages faculty participation and development of scholarship programs. Coordinates the implementation of the faculty advisor program.

• Work with the FSILG Advising Team to ensure a diverse slate of programs and an open, welcome environment for all students in the FSILG community. Proactively seeks ideas and opportunities for programs in the FSILGs.

• Work with Residence Life to enable effective collaboration between FSILGs and residence hall communities and to engage all FSILGs in promoting campus-wide community.

• Develops relationships with MIT departments and faculty that will enable improved programming with the FSILGs, including the Office of Academic Services, Health Education, MIT Medical, Athletics, and other areas of SLP.

• Is available to mediate complaints between MIT Students and between and within MIT student organizations. Available for advising individual students and student leaders, as appropriate.

• Other duties and projects as assigned.

Supervision Received
Direct supervision is received from the Assistant Dean and Director of Fraternities, Sororities, and Living Groups on an ongoing basis. Weekly meetings are held, as well as daily problem solving and issues resolution.

Supervision Exercised
Supervision is exercised over graduate interns and/or student workers, as appropriate

Qualifications
Bachelors Degree required. Masters Degree in Student Personnel and/or Higher Education preferred. 1-3 years experience preferred. Graduate school experience may count as professional experience. Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-task environment and the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing environment is required. Experience and skills in conflict resolution, leadership training, public speaking and writing are necessary, as is good judgment and sensitivity in understanding and relating to students of various backgrounds. Must possess the ability to articulate a student development philosophy in a high intensity academic environment. Knowledge of computer programs required. Must be both team and service-oriented with the ability to work collaboratively with students, alumni, administration, and local officials. Preference will be given to candidates with an appreciation for the value of the fraternal experience as a component of the college educational experience. Evenings and weekend hours are necessary
