Assistantship
The MIT Student Activities Finance Office is offering a 3-month assistantship for a graduate student pursuing a degree in the field of Business Administration or Higher Education Administration. The assistantship provides an opportunity to learn about financial systems, account management, and business office models in higher education.
The Student Activities Finance Office (SAFO) assists and advises MIT student organizations with all financial matters. SAFO is committed to providing centralized services for student organizations in accessing their internal accounts, providing quality customer service in a responsive way, providing resources and information to students and student organizations about Institute policies and procedures, and collaborating with students to meet the changing needs of the MIT community.
During the 3-month experience, the graduate assistant will be given a balance of daily responsibilities along with some more project-based work:
- Foster friendly, service-oriented relationships with MIT's student organization leaders and related offices and departments.
- Review and sign off daily on expense vouchers and write and issue checks. Process Institute financial forms and requisitions. Assist in monthly review of account statements, reconciliation, and financial record keeping.
- Advise students on their accounts and financial management practices. Serve as primary contact for information regarding student organization financial transactions and reporting.
- Recommend and develop mechanisms for improving service to students and their organizations.
- Create a communications manual and marketing materials for other MIT departments so that they can better understand our services and policies.
- Review administrative models of Student Activities Business/Finance Offices at peer institutions and extract best practices.
Remuneration
The graduate assistant will receive a total stipend of $3,000. The position is a 3 month commitment, from June through August (exact dates negotiable). The Graduate Assistant is expected to work 35 hours a week between 8:30 – 5pm.
Qualifications
Qualifications: Enrollment in a graduate degree program at MIT or a neighboring college/university. Financial systems experience required, SAP and Quickbooks experience highly preferred. Must be detail and customer-service oriented.
