Graduate Assistantship – Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender Programs

The Student Life Programs at MIT is seeking an area graduate student interested in an assistantship supporting our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally community.

The Graduate Assistant is responsible for providing support for Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender (LBGT) Programs and the LBGT Issues Group. The LBGT Issues Group consists of students, staff, and faculty from across MIT who work to ensure that the educational mission of MIT is upheld for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.  Working with student employees and the Student Life Programs staff, the Assistant will:

  • Coordinate and staff the Rainbow Lounge (MIT’s LBGT Resource Center)
  • Coordinate meetings, assist in implementing events and programs (including the “You Are Welcome Here” Campaign, Rainbow Reception, Discussion Groups and Lavender Graduation).
  • Develop and maintain support mechanisms and resources for LBGT community members and allies.
  • Coordinate outreach efforts to student living and campus groups, as well as key offices, to help build support networks AND reach isolated LBGTQ community members.
  • Work with Grad Assistants from the BSU, LCC, and other campus groups to provide cross-cultural programs/events to the MIT community.
  • Write and compile a monthly newsletter and schedule of events.
  • Help the staff of student activities advise and support student organizations, including attending meetings and assisting in developing initiatives and planning events.
  • Support the efforts of the staff organizations (Q Staff, and GABLES), the alumni organization (BGALA), and provide assistance to various members of the LBGT Issues Group on different projects.
  • Attend and assist in planning an annual LBGTQA leadership and community-building retreat (September 10-12, 2004 in Provincetown, Massachusetts).  Coordinate follow-up leadership meetings and programs.
  • Identify needs within the community and develop creative responses and/or programs.

Remuneration
The graduate assistant will receive a total stipend of $9,000.  The position is 9 months, from September through May.  Availability between August 30 and September 3 helpful (MIT’s new student orientation period).  The Graduate Assistant is expected to work 15-20 hours a week; hours are distributed between day and evening hours.  On rare occasions, weekend work may be necessary.

Qualifications
Previous experience serving or working with lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender organizations or individuals, preferably in a college environment.  Enrollment in a graduate degree program at MIT or a neighboring college/university.
