The current dominant U.S. power position in world politics is most starkly
manifested in the military sphere. U.S. policy makers understand that the
U.S. has an advantage and they intend to keep it, and to exploit it. Policy
makers in the other consequential powers understand that the U.S. has this
advantage, though they are not entirely certain how to deal with it. This
analysis takes a deeper look at U.S. military power to distinguish between
its areas of greatest strength and its areas of greatest vulnerability. What
types of military strategy make the most sense for the U.S. and why? Where
might the U.S. encounter its greatest difficulties and why? What does the
analysis tell us about military relations between the U.S. and its allies?
