Ongoing Research We are currently analyzing 15 days of ticket samples provided by Amadeus, S.A.S. from 2004 in order to estimate ticket taxes for the EU-15 nations of the European Union. Shiro Yamanaka CE '05, a recent MIT graduate from the Ticket Tax Project has completed a master's thesis on the taxation of tickets in the U.S. and EU-15 nations. An abstract and citation are available in the MIT library catalog. Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies On January 24, we presented our U.S. findings and preliminary findings for the EU-15 nations at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board. FAA National Center of Excellence for Operations Research (NEXTOR) Meeting On January 20, we presented results from our project along with representatives from four other universities that form the FAA's National Center of Excellence for Operations Research (NEXTOR). The FAA Air Traffic Organization has published an article covering the NEXTOR meeting. Joint Meeting of the MIT Global Airline Industry Program Advisory Board and Airline Industry Consortium On November 4, 2005 the Industry Advisory Board of the MIT Global Airline Industry Program and the newly formed MIT Airline Industry Consortium held a joint meeting. The ticket tax project team presented a summary of its U.S. findings, as well as updated results from the EU-15 analysis. MIT Research Spotlight On April 15, 2005 our project was once again the spotlight feature on the main MIT web page. We were previously featured June 22, 2004 (an archived version is available). Media Updates Airline Business Report extensively featured our research in an April 11, 2005 article on privatizing air traffic control. The Boston Globe published a short article on April 10 which summarizes how declining fares have caused the effective ticket tax rate to increase. Also, ATWOnline, the online publication of Air Transport World, featured our research in its Daily News section on March 24, 2005. An accompanying article very nicely summarizes our research results. MIT Tech Talk Our colleagues at the MIT News Office have been busy: The MIT/DWC ticket tax project was featured on the front page of the March 16, 2005 edition of MIT Tech Talk. Proposed Security Fee Hike Several newspaper articles covering a proposed $3 increase in the security fee have been published with references to the MIT/DWC ticket tax project: Airlines object to plan to increase ticket fees. Chicago Tribune, February 8, 2005 Airlines aim to ground doubling of security tax. The Washington Times, February 7, 2005 MIT Airline Industry Advisory Board Meeting We made a presentation of our findings to the Industry Advisory Board of the MIT Global Airline Industry Program on November 4, 2004 at MIT. This included the first formal presentation of our EU results, although these are still preliminary. The presentation is available . Article: Journal of Air Transport Management Our article "The impact of infrastructure-related taxes and fees on domestic airline fares in the US" has been published in the July 2004 issue (Vol. 10, No. 4) of the Journal of Air Transport Management. The article was also featured in Current Readings in Transport Economics, Vol. 2, No.3. iCivilEngineer The civil engineering web portal iCivilEngineer has added an announcement of our study to its web pages. NEXTOR Workshop On June 21, 2004, the study team presented at a workshop sponsored by the FAA's National Center of Excellence for Aviation Operations Research (NEXTOR), held at the Aspen Institute's Wye Woods Conference Center in Queenstown, MD. The theme of the conference was "Government, the Airline Industry and the Flying Public: a New Way of Doing Business." More information is available at http://www.nextor.org/Jun04.html, and our presentation is available here. 3rd Annual MIT Airline Industry Conference On April 15, 2004, the study team presented its findings at the 3rd annual MIT airline industry conference held at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. The theme of the conference was "Winds of Change: The Airline Industry in 2004." GAO Uses DWC/MIT Study in Report to Congress on Aviation Taxes The General Accounting Office (GAO) has published a report that uses the results from the U.S. phase of our study to document the current level of commercial aviation taxes. The report also includes materials used by the GAO to brief the Subcommittee on Aviation of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. |
