UEA Teaching Awards
I'm pleased to announce that the UEA's 2010 Undergraduate Teaching Awards go to Parag Pathak
(Professor Award) and Alp Simsek (TA Award). They will both receive gift certificates to local
restaurants and their names will be engraved for all posterity on the teaching awards plaque in
E52-391. Congratulations to both Alp and Professor Pathak!

What Have We Learned, If Anything?
Friday February 5th at 4:15PM in 32-123.
As the economy slowly recovers from the financial crisis of last year, what can we learn
from the experience of this most recent recession, and how can we prevent it from happening
again? Can new laws and regulations prevent another crash, or will the US suffer a "lost
decade" like Japan? Nobel Prize winning economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman
(Course XIV PhD '77) will speak on the lessons of the financial crisis and offer his advice.
Reception will follow.

How can Neuroscience explain economic decisions?

Why do human beings cooperate in societies? Why are we altruistic? Why do we care about fairness? And what does it
mean for economics? Ernst Fehr, visting professor from the University of Zurich, director of the Institute for
Empirical Research in Economics, and pioneer in the field of neuroeconomics, will present his interdisciplinary
research on social preferences and their relation to economic incentives.

Walmart, the world's largest corporation, has made a worldwide reputation on cost-cutting and low prices.
However, some claim its business practices have negative effects on surrounding communities. So who's right?
Jerry Hausman, MacDonald Professor of Economics at MIT and 1985 winner of the John Bates Clark Medal, will present
current research and comments on the role of Walmart in communities and its overall effect on the poor.
A reception will follow immediately afterwards.

N. Gregory Mankiw, Harvard Economics Professor and MIT Graduate (Course
XIV PhD '84), and Robert Solow, MIT Economic Professor and 1987 winner
of the Nobel Prize in Economics, will speak at a panel discussion and
field all of your questions about the best policies and
approaches the new President should take.
