Preparations Begin for Summer 2009 Amgen-UROP Scholars Program

***** ______

Student applications are currently being accepted for the 2009 Amgen-UROP Scholars Program, scheduled to run June 8 through August 7, 2009. Managed by the Office of Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming (UAAP), Amgen-UROP is geared to undergraduates focused on research in the sciences and biotechnology areas. Up to 26 students will be accepted and placed in MIT labs to collaborate with MIT faculty; approximately half will be recruited from other US colleges and universities.

______

Amgen Scholars conduct full-time summer research under the direction of MIT faculty, and enjoy the same benefits as summer UROP students. Scholars participate in important research, gain hands-on lab experience, and develop lasting connections with faculty and other research mentors.

In addition to full-time research, Amgen Scholars participate in weekly educational and social events, attend a mid-summer biotechnology research symposium at UCLA, and will present at an end of summer poster session held at MIT.

While MIT faculty are invited to host Amgen Scholars in their laboratories, they are not asked to provide financial support. All wages for these students are covered by an Amgen Foundation grant, managed by the UAAP.

The deadline for student applications is February 2. Program administrators will work through February and early March to match successful applicants with MIT laboratories.

      • Faculty interested in hosting an Amgen Scholar are encouraged to be in touch with Michael Bergren at mberg@mit.edu.

      • Information for potential faculty mentors, including eligible research areas, is available on the Amgen-UROP web site.

      • MIT’s Amgen-UROP Scholars Program will run June 8 through August 7, 2009.
