Experimental Study Group: ESG

The Experimental Study Group is the oldest of MIT’s alternative learning communities and offers small, interactive classes in the core curriculum for MIT freshmen who are self-motivated and want to take an active role in their learning. In addition, ESG offers upperclassmen the opportunity to assist in teaching and to develop new seminars. Special emphasis is placed on curricular innovation including experimental and hands-on seminars each spring, and new approaches to the core curriculum. In particular, ESG is currently engaged in a three-year experiment in bringing more energy-related problems into the core curriculum.
