IntroductionIn the pages of this web site you will find evaluations for all subjects that have been evaluated in the MIT Student Subject Evaluation process since spring term 1999. Departmental participation in MIT Student Subject Evaluation is voluntary. At the present time, four departments-Course 2 (Mechanical Engineering, Course 6 (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), Course 16 (Aeronautics and Astronautics), and Course 15 (Management)-have developed their own evaluation systems. As a result, evaluations for these departments can be found here only for subjects that are offered jointly with departments participating in Student Subject Evaluations. Subject Evaluation Policy and ProceduresAcademic departments determine the subjects to be evaluated each term. They also determine which of two survey forms to use, one designed for Science and Engineering or one designed for Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Prior to and during the end-of-term evaluation period there is extensive coordination between the Office of Faculty Services, which manages the subject evaluation process, and departmental academic administrators. Forms are delivered to these administrators; they, in turn, give forms to individual faculty who distribute them in class at the end of the term. After distributing the forms and giving instructions on questions provided by the department, the instructor should exert no further influence. Some may accomplish this by leaving the room, while others may elect to sit where they are unable to observe student responses. On the front page of each survey students rate each of their instructors, as well as the subject itself, on a seven-point scale with questions in a variety of categories. The back page of the surveys provides space for open-ended comments by the students. Students should respond independently and engage in no group discussions. A student volunteer should collect and return the forms to the designated department administrator. The departmental administrators return the forms to OFS, which tabulates results and publishes the reports on quantitative data that you find here. Average (mean) responses with standard deviations and the number of responses are reported for each question on the front page of the surveys. The forms, with the written comments, are returned to the departments where they are made available for review by instructors, department heads and other officers, and in some cases, students. Instructors are not to have access to information on the forms until after all grades have been submitted for the subject. New Online System
