Registration for Summer Session

A limited number of MIT subjects are offered in the Summer Session. MIT students may register for Summer Session provided they have successfully completed the preceding spring term and have not already graduated. Any former regular student who has not completed degree requirements at MIT or elsewhere and who wishes to register for the Summer Session must apply for readmission through Student Support Services (S^3) . A student on a Second Required Withdrawal from the Committee on Academic Performance (CAP) must apply directly to the CAP to be allowed to participate in Summer Session. Others wishing to enroll in the Summer Session should apply to the Director of Admissions for admission as a Special Student.

There is no credit limit for summer session. However, given the brevity and intensity of the summer session, most students take only one 12-unit subject.

An abbreviated Summer Session Catalogue is issued in March and available online. In addition to the subjects listed in the Summer Session Catalogue, students may register for thesis research in any department offering such registration during the regular year. There is a fixed fee for thesis research on a per-unit basis, with minimum and maximum amounts.

In May, students can pre-register for the Summer Session online using WebSIS

Students who have just completed their freshman year will no longer be on ABC/No Record grading during Summer Session.

Sophomores may not designate subjects as Exploratory during Summer Session. Juniors and seniors may use the Junior-Senior P/D/F option for Summer Session subjects.

Dropping a Summer Session Subject

To cancel registration for a subject, a student should ask his or her faculty advisor to sign an "Add/Drop/Change" form, noting the specific date of the drop, and should take the form to the Student Services Center (SSC) or the Registrar's Office. If a student cancels his or her registration during the first eight weeks of the Summer Session, tuition will be adjusted from the starting date of the term on the basis of a weekly charge of one-eighth of the initial tuition. Subjects may be dropped through the last day of classes.
