Changing Your Password

If you have forgotten your password, you MUST visit us in person and show valid picture identification so we know it is really you. Alternatively, you may visit the password changing website listed below to use your MIT Certificate to prove your identity. We have office hours in N42-140 from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M., Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Those working from inside Lincoln Laboratory should go here.

If you know your password and want to change it, do the following:

Using a Web Browser:
You may use the password changing website at:

http://wserv.mit.edu/cpw

Simply click on the link above, and follow the instructions on the page to change your password. Note:You may also use this page to change your password using your MIT Certificate for identification. If you have a valid MIT Certificate, you can use it to reset your password without coming to N42.

You may also use the URL above to set your preferences indicating whether or not you wish to be able to change your password using this website.

From Athena:
Type the following at the athena% prompt:

passwd

This will ask you for your old password, and ask you to type in the new password twice. Your new password takes effect immediately. You may also want to read the OLC Stock answer on How to chooose a good password.

From Windows:
You will need to have Kerberos for Windows installed to change your password. If you are running Eudora, this should be already installed. From the Windows start menu, choose run and enter

next to open and click ok. Under action select get ticket and enter your username and password. To change password, click action and select change password and follow the online instructions. The password change takes effect immediately.

From Macintosh:
You will need to have Kerberos for Mac installed to change your password. If you are running Eudora, this should be already installed in the Control Panels. Double click on the Kerberos icon to run. Click Get Tickets and enter username and password where prompted. (Leave instance blank). Once you have a ticket, click change password and follow instructions on changing password. The password change takes effect immediately.
