New (7/5/02): Star Office 6.0 now available

What is Star Office? Where does it come from?

Star Office is an Office Suite that runs on a variety of platforms including Solaris and Linux. It has recently been acquired by Sun Microsystems and is being freely distributed.

Star Office on Athena

Star Office 6.0 is the current default on Athena for Sun and Linux (i.e., this is the version you get by typing: add soffice;soffice). It is not available for SGI.

General usage information can be found in the What Runs Where listing and in the soffice locker in file /mit/soffice/README.athena. We also have some local "getting started" pages. There is a fairly extensive online help system that explains most features. A number of commercial guides are available, including Star Office for Linux, published by Howard SAMS.
