List of codes used on 802.3 and Ethernet networks.

This file contains collected information on the various codes used on
IEEE 802.3 and Ethernet. There are three "pages" of data: type codes,
vendor codes, and the uses of multicast (including broadcast) addresses.
These same codes are also used on some other IEEE 802 networks (e.g. 802.5 is
Token Ring), but may be in slightly different form. Specifically 802.5 sends
the bits of a byte in the opposite order to Ethernet or 802.3, so the codes
listed below may have the bits of each byte reversed (e.g. exchange 01/80,
10/08, 0C/30, etc.), although some monitors may undo the reversal back to the
Ethernet order. Be careful using this reference for other IEEE 802 media.
There is also this page of general info and a page of acknowledgments.
I wish to thank the contributors, many are listed on the acknowledgments
page and there are almost certainly others that I have missed. There
is also a list of other sources of Ethernet info.
Note that these pages are reports of codes seen "in the field" and are
thus subject to errors of observation, and are certainly incomplete.
They also report the actual vendor of the equipment rather than the
original assignment of the code. The IEEE site (see below) has their
info which is different. Whenever a question arises, I suggest
consulting both lists for useful information.
If you are reading this from a stored copy, you may want to get a more
up-to-date copy on the net, or you may want to just bookmark the
pointer for future reference. The three main URLs for the document are:

My thanks to Karl Auerbach at Cavebear for providing a place to make
this available. If you are having problems with the servers, Karl is
the one to contact, if you have questions or comments on the content,
you can contact Mike Patton.
Since this information is from collected wisdom, there are certainly
omissions. I welcome any further additions which can be sent to
Ethernet-codes@Cavebear.com.
I appreciate it if submissions include a preformatted line for the
acknowledgments section (mostly because I have trouble figuring out
what abbreviations will be acceptable when names are too long), and to
format lines as they are here in the main listings. These will ease
my use of cut-and-paste to update the list with less effort.
We are presently working out a mirroring strategy for these files. If
you are interested in participating, please send mail to the address
above, include any relevant info, we'll get back to you eventually...

The data on these pages was collected by Michael A. Patton, Internet
Consultant, from contributions by the Internet community. Only a
globally connected information community can produce collected wisdom
like this list, and therefore, in addition to the specific contributors
to the list, all those who make the Internet what it is are part of what
made this list possible.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Other Ethernet info
Other information about Ethernet and related technologies is available
from various sites on the network.
Charles Spurgeon at U. Texas has collected lots of information
on Ethernet with lots of good configuration guidelines.
Another site has collected references for Ethernet analyzers.
Pointers to other general resources can be sent in for inclusion in
future updates.
Number assignment
More information may be obtained from IEEE which assigns the vendor codes.
You can get a full listing by sending E-Mail to info.stds.oui@ieee.org (any
mail to that address will be responded to with the full list), you can also
obtain the list from . The
listing from IEEE contains company addresses as well as names, but is limited
to those entries which the companies request be made public, while the list
you are reading contains some entries determined from systems in the field.
You can read more about this on the IEEE Standards Process Automation
(SPA) System at with
lookups at .

Ethertypes
The 13th and 14th octets of an Ethernet or IEEE802.3 packet (after
the preamble) consist of the "Ethernet Type" or "IEEE802.3 Length"
field. The "Ethernet Type" values are managed by XEROX. Some
assignments are public (see + below), others private. Current
information includes: Xerox Public Ethernet Packet Type
documentation(Xerox Courier Vol. 3 Issue 4 October 1988); IEEE802.3
Std; NIC RFC1010; contributions from network managers and vendors.

Notes
* These protocols use Ethernet broadcast, where multicast would be preferable.
% Possible Private Protocols, i.e. not registered
+ These protocols are mentioned by Xerox in their October 1988 issue of
COURIER (page 8-9) as the publicly assigned numbers. Only vendors are
listed by Xerox, not what protocols.
@ According to the October 1988 issue of COURIER (page 8), "if it is less
than 600H, the packet is assumed to be an 802.3 packet; if it is greater
than 600H, the packet is flagged as an Ethernet packet."
Vendor codes
Ethernet hardware addresses are 48 bits, expressed as 12 hexadecimal
digits (0-9, plus A-F, capitalized). These 12 hex digits consist of the
first/left 6 digits (which should match the vendor of the Ethernet
interface within the station) and the last/right 6 digits which specify
the interface serial number for that interface vendor.
Ethernet addresses might be written unhyphenated (e.g. 123456789ABC), or
with one hyphen (e.g. 123456-789ABC), but should be written hyphenated
by octets (e.g. 12-34-56-78-9A-BC).
These addresses are physical station addresses, not multicast nor
broadcast, so the second hex digit (reading from the left) will be even,
not odd.
According to some informal correspondence, when the IEEE assigns an
Ethernet address block, a block of 2**25 is reserved. Both a unicast
and a multicast (group address) block, in a pair. Thus multicast groups
for vendor-specific uses tend to match the non-multicast vendor
assignments with "010000" added. This rule seems to be true for most of
the addresses in these files.
A portion of the vendor block address is reportedly assigned serially,
with the other portion intentionally assigned randomly. If there is a
global algorithm for which addresses are designated to be physical (in a
chipset) versus logical (assigned in software), or globally-assigned
versus locally-assigned addresses, some of the known addresses do not
follow the scheme (e.g AA0003; 02xxxx).
