Standardized Tests

We require the following tests: 1) the SAT (old or new) or the ACT; and 2) two SAT Subject Tests, one in Mathematics (Level 1 or Level 2) and one in Science (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology E/M).

If your native language is not English, you may satisfy testing requirements by taking the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) in place of the SAT or ACT. You still must take two SAT Subject tests, one in Mathematics (Level 1 or Level 2) and one in Science (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology E/M). If you have been using English for less than five years or do not speak English at home, we strongly suggest you take the TOEFL.

If you have taken the SAT or ACT more than once, we will use the highest score achieved in each section for our evaluation.

Beginning in August 2019, TOEFL is making a change to include superscores or "MyBest Scores" on all score reports. We will accept and evaluate these scores the same way we consider superscores for all other tests. We will also accept TOEFL scores for Regular Action applicants through the January test dates.

  • You can get more information and register for the SAT tests online at www.collegeboard.org, for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) at www.ets.org/toefl, and for the ACT at www.act.org.
  • It is important that you register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application or MyMIT account.  Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.
  • Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list here and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official. Our SAT and TOEFL code is 3514 and our ACT code is 1858.
  • November is the last acceptable testing date for Early Action applications.
  • December is the last acceptable testing date for Regular Action applications.  Please note: If you are an Early Action applicant, or if you are a Regular Action applicant and take the November test, or if you take the December test, you must list MIT as a school to receive your scores when you take the test or we will not receive them in time for our review.
  • Applications without a complete set of test results will be at a disadvantage, but will still be considered.
