S. Mark Spearing
Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics

Teaching Interests

Professor Spearing's teaching interests lie in the area of structural materials.  In particular he is engaged in increasing the linkage between the teaching of structural mechanics and structural materials and in increasing the laboratory component of the undergraduate curriculum.

During 2001/2002 he taught the materials and structures lectures in the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department's Unified Engineering course (16.01-04).  In the spring semester he co-taught a new graduate course on materials and processes for micro-electromechanical systems (3.48J/16.288J). This course forms part of the course offerings in the Singapore - MIT Alliance and the Cambridge-MIT Institute.

In past semesters Professor Spearing has taught:

16.200 – Structural Mechanics,
16.202 – Manufacturing with Advanced Composites,
16.222 – The Mechanics of Filamentary Composites,
16.295 – The Failure Mechanics of Advanced Composites, and
16.251 – Structural Design for Longevity.

Professor Spearing will be on sabbatical from 2002 to 2003.
