Joe Coughlin keynoted at South America's
largest business leaders event, HSM
ExpoManagement in San Paolo, Brazil.
Joining other keynote presenters such
as Alan Greenspan, Michael Porter, Michael
Eisner, and Ray Kurzweil, Dr. Coughlin
will present his research on the new business
of old age examining 5 the impact of longevity
on innovation.
AgeLab researcher Dr. Lisa D'Ambrosio
presented webinar with Maureen Mohyde
from The Hartford to American Occupational
Therapy Association (AOTA) on November
7 2007. Their presentation will be entittled
"Alzheimer’s, Dementia and Driving: The
Transition from Driver to Passenger."
On November 2nd Dr. Bryan Reimer presents
at the National Advanced Driving Simulator
at the University of Iowa. Dr. Reimer
discussed his research in a talk entitled
"Changing Demographics and the Impact
on Future Vehicle Development." The National
Advanced Driving Simulator is the world's
most advanced ground vehicle simulator
used in safety, health and other factors
that affect driving performance.
Research scientist Lisa D'Ambrosio, Ph.D.of
the MIT AgeLab, presented at the 2007
AARP National Event and Expo in Boston
as part of the University Session with
Director of the Corporate Group at The
Hartford Maureen Mohyde and Interim Director
Frank Carroll of Driver Safety Program
& Mobility Options, Livable Communities,
AARP Outreach and Service. The session,
titled "We Need to Talk… Family Conversations
with Older Drivers," discussed the significance
of driving for older adults and reviewed
MIT AgeLab and Hartford research on older
drivers. The presentation was based on
the publication
"We Need to Talk… Family Conversations
with Older Drivers". Also, the session
discussed the synthesis of AARP Outreach
and Service, The Hartford and the MIT
AgeLab's work in developing an award winning
video/DVD and workshop program being introduced
by AARP nationwide.

AgeLab researcher Dr. Bryan Reimer presented
his paper "Young
Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD): The impact of secondary
tasks on driving performance" at the
Driving Simulation North America Conference
in Iowa City. Dr. Reimer’s research
concluded certain types and complexity
of secondary tasks, when combined, in
specific driving situations can exploit
deficiencies in an ADHD driver's performance.
In addition, results of the study indicated
context plays an important roll in the
allocation of an ADHD driver’s attention
and ADHD drivers appear to be drawn to
high-demanding situations at the expense
of safety. As part of a larger MIT AgeLab
and New England University Transportation
Center initiative investigating the impact
of medical disorders on driver performance,
this research was conducted in collaboration
with the clinical research staff in the
Pediatric Psychopharmacology Research
Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital
Department.

AgeLab and Healthways Host Health
Literacy in a Consumer-Directed World
Forum
The AgeLab hosted a Health Literacy &
Navigating a Consumer-Directed World forum.
The forum sponsored by Healthways, the
largest disease management firm in the
United States, included representatives
from government, information technology
firms, insurers, pharmaceutical and consumer
products companies, and non-governmental
organizations such as the Gingrich Group's
Center for Health Transformation and the
National Minority Quality Forum. AgeLab
Director Joe Coughlin helped frame the
business, policy and research agenda.
The group discussed how understanding
new roles, responsibilities and technologies
can ensure an informed and efficacious
health care patient and caregiver in a
consumer-driven marketplace. The forum
is the first of several events AgeLab's
new Navigation Studio or NavStudio research
initiative. NavStudio research aims to
uncover how consumers navigate complex
systems, e.g., health, retirement and
transportation across the lifespan. More
