Introduction for New Visiting Committee Volunteers

Visiting Committee Guide
Main Accreditation Info Page

Our review teams consist of a minimum of three and a maximum of four members. In our normal cycle, the teams visit two organizations, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, spending two hours with each organization. The teams complete the first draft of their reviews before leaving for the day. We occasionally have a half day review team if we have an odd number of organizations and we sometimes accomodate the religious beliefs of the students and alumni/ae by scheduling reviews at a time other than Saturday.

The Saturday reviews begin at 8:15 am, include a full hot breakfast, a lunch, and an afternoon snack and finish up about 4pm.

We bring new volunteers up to speed by assigning them to a committee with at least two "seasoned" volunteers. Committee formation is a little bit complex, since we cannot send alumni/ae to visit their own organizations, nor can we have two visitors from the same organization on a team. We also try to have the team captain be from the same "type" of organization (Fraternity / Sorority / ILG), although this is not always possible.

Visitors are asked to read the visitor information on the web site at http://web.mit.edu/ailg/ailgreviews/ (the main page and especially the Visiting Committees page).

Each semester, I ask our volunteers to provide their availabilty for the accreditation dates, and I record the available dates on the Visiting Committees page. I try to finalize the committees three or four weeks, or longer, before the review dates. If at all possible, I do not schedule volunteers more than one time each semester.

Welcome to this important volunteer task. If you have any questions about the program, feel free to call me at any time.
