My research is on Integrated Modeling of Surface and Subsurface Hydrology using physically-based distributed hydrologic modeling. This research is part of the center for environmental sensing and modeling (censam) which was established by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). My adviser is Prof. Dara Entekhabi. This research is also a collaboration with Prof. Fabio Castelli of the University of Firenze in Italy.

I join this research in September 2008. As of now, we are considering using either the TIN-based Realtime Integrated Basin Simulator (tRIBS) or the MOdello Bilancio Idrologico DIstributo e Continuo (MOBIDIC).

Conceptual diagram of tRIBS [Vivoni, E. et al., 2002] Conceptual diagram of MOBIDIC [Castelli, F., 2008]

The current goals of the research are the following:

  1. Improve modeling of the unsaturated zone and its dynamic interface with the saturated zone (perhaps adding a 3-D groundwater module)
  2. Improve modeling of the groundwater-surface water interaction
  3. Continue the development of a complete contaminant fate and transport model integrated with the distributed hydrologic model (initial efforts will focus on a conservative chemical tracer)
  4. Add an ensemble data assimilation capability (e.g. Ensemble Kalman Filter)
