21W.731, Fall 2009: Writing and Experience: Exploring Self in Society

Essay #3 Sequence

Drawing upon your own experiences or the experiences of someone else, write an essay that explores a theme of interest to a broader readership.  As in your previous essays, pay careful attention to the ways in which you reflectively narrate your own (and/or others’ experiences) using the elements of fiction (character, setting, dialogue) within nonfiction. When you revise, consider the ways in which reading and discussing short fiction can enable your nonfiction writing style to become more creative. Experimenting with different approaches and styles (e.g. third person, first person –diary, letter) can help you to grow significantly as a writer.
By the revised version of this essay, you should incorporate interview material from at least one person and two secondary sources as references (to support your view or present counterargument) cited within the essay. Attach a “Works Consulted” page. If you have not yet included interview material in the first version, describe your plans for interviewing in the cover letter of version #1.
