***************************************************** MIT Anime Club Summer Showing Friday, July 27th 7:00 PM in 54-100 ***************************************************** The MIT Anime Club will be having a summer showing on Friday, July 27 starting at 7:00 PM. NOTE: We figured out that we can still end by 1PM if we start at 7:00, so we're back to our regular time. Since the T will have stopped running, we'll arrange for rides home for anyone who needs them. We continue our: Gambatte ne! Maison Ikkoku monomaniacal multi-marathon! Since it will be a long evening, we'll get pizza (to be sold at about $1 a slice (enough to cover costs and maybe add to our fansub fund)). If you've been following our _Maison Ikkoku_ showings, look here: http://www.sempai.org/comic/pages/1999/Nov/19991101.html This may be your only chance to see some of these episodes. Their fate at the hands of the commercial licensee (Viz) is in some doubt (despite being a classic, it's not been a commercial success at two episodes per tape), and with this showing we've moved beyond the episodes that Viz has released. 38: Godai's lost love? Kozue approaching Mitaka? After hearing of her classmates summer conquests (followed by Godai's evident disinterest) Kozue asks Mitaka for advice about relationships from the male perspective. But, of course, this looks to everyone else (well, to Godai and Kyoko) as though Kozue has started dating Mitaka. 39: Guts for love! Godai's operation part-time. Being short on cash, Godai sets out to work all-nighters to buy Kyoko a Christmas gift but then he's put on the spot by Kozue.... Meanwhile, Kyoko asks Godai to investigate a curious rock. At a tutoring session, Ikuko reminisces that the only gift Kyoko ever received from Souichiro was.... a curious rock. 40: Tender warm heart. X-mas is a time for love. When Sakamoto *loses* Kyoko's precious rock, Godai drags him through the snow and the subways in search of it. 41: Heart-thumping! Kyoko out of the bath? Open bath peeping wars! The entire gang go to a hot springs resort, where Yotsuya looks for chinks in the stone wall between the male and female sides. To save money (for alchohol), Ichinose-san books them all into a single room. 42: Godai's broken bone! Chance for love in the hospital. When Godai breaks his leg while saving Kyoko, Kyoko begins to feel responsible for Godai and offers to take care of him in the hospital. *Pin-pon*, 42 episodes into the series, almost halfway through, is something about to happen in this relationship? 43: Sparks of love! Hospital feud - Godai vs Mitaka. ...Not if Mitaka can influence the outcome. After hearing about Godai's accident (and Kyoko's resolve), Mitaka has a ski "accident" himself and by chance, booking the same room of the same hospital -- a perfect setting to fight for Kyoko's affection. 44: Kentaro in shock. Who really is Yotsuya? Manga fans, this episode is not in the manga. Kentaro finds an old photo album in the attic with pictures of the unaging Yotsuya from 50-100 years ago. Who is Yotsuya, really? 45: Big announcement!!! Kyoko admits her love to Godai?! Still feeling responsible for Godai's accident (and the fact that he's missed a great deal of school as a result), Kyoko rules Ikkoku-kan with an iron fist, protecting Godai's study-time. But this just moves the party to *her* room. After a night hosting the loons, Kyoko oversleeps, and fails to keep her promise to awaken Godai for his critical final exam. Fearing that Godai might need to repeat another year because of her, Kyoko tearfully informs him that she can wait another year. *Pin-pon* maybe something *is* happening in this relationship? 46: Fight for Kyoko! Skating rink is love's battleground. The gang go ice-skating together, and discover that neither Mitaka nor Godai know how to skate. Godai and Mitaka compete for lessons from Kyoko-sensei. (I think this episode *should* come after episode 49 --- Akemi and Yotsuya exhibit knowledge of Mitaka's other disability, knowledge they don't gain until that episode.) 47: Kyoko in a mess. Drunk and crazy. Godai, temporarily employed at a local biergarten, offers to treat Kyoko. Unfortunately, the rest of the gang get wind of this, and come along.... 48: Godai's revelation. I wish you understand how I feel. Kyoko returns to her parents to nurse her flu-stricken mother ``for a few days''. This stay evolves into a contest of wills between Kyoko (who longs to return to Ikkoku-kan) and her parents (who long to keep her home). When Kyoko feigns a need for her ``favorite pillow''. But her mother outwits her, and calls Ikkoku-kan to have the pillow brought over. Godai seizes the opportunity to see Kyoko. When asked by her parents if he has a ``girlfriend'', Godai makes a bold (for him, anyway) statement of love. 49: Mitaka's training! No love is achieved if I'm scared of dogs! Another departure from the manga, the gang decide to help Mitaka overcome his fear of dogs. Heh, heh, heh. There's rather a nice scene here in which Godai bolts to Mitaka's rescue, concealing the coach's affliction from Kyoko. United against a common ``enemy''? 50: Kyoko in love at first sight?! A strange fellow moves into Ikkoku-kan. In yet *another* departure from the manga, room three of Ikkoku-kan is taken by a mysterious (in the way that Yotsuya is mysterious), but rather sweet older gentleman, who reminds Kyoko very much of Souichiro. As Godai and Mitaka begin to fret about a potential new rival, rumors surface that Ikkoku-kan going to be demonished begins to surface. 51: Even Yotsuya is shocked. The day Ikkoku-kan disappears. The conclusion of the story-arc begun in the last episode. As the gang tries to figure out the fate of Ikkoku-kan, rumors surface that their new tenant is somehow connected with Ikkoku-kan's fate. - david mankins (dm@bbn.com, dm@world.std.com)
