The R.O.D franchise comprises two manga series, eight novels, an OAV series, and now the TV series. All are written by Hideyuki Kurata, and the animations have been directed by Masunary Koji. (Kurata has had different collaborators on the two manga series.) The first manga series is called _Read or Die_ and tells the story of Yomiko Readman, special agent for the British Museum Library, her friend Nenene Sumiregawa, a teen prodigy best-selling novelist, and Yomiko's co-workers in the library --- Mr. Gentleman, Mr. Joker, and Wendy. We also hear about Yomiko's lover, Donny, who preceded her as The Paper. Yomiko's glasses were a gift from Donny. The second manga series is called _Read or Dream_. It tells the story of the three Paper Sisters and their detective agency in Hong Kong. In an early episode Michelle described their business as looking for ``lost books, and lost cats'', and that's not too far from the essence of this manga series. The _Read or Dream_ manga is almost shoujo --- the sisters' first case involves a stolen book containing a love-letter (capturing the mugger gives Anita a chance to spring into action, and Michelle gets a chance to practice her archery). This TV series is ``R.O.D the TV'', and the title of the first episode tonight highlights the ambiguity behind the initials ``R.O.D''. Episode 21 & 22: "D.O.D -DREAM OR DIE-" & "To Seize" Anita learns that the British Library can control more than just books. Wendy shows herself to be ruthless and cunning. A new ED song (sung by Yomiko's seiyuu). Episode 23: "Lies, Then Silence" Revelations. Exchanges. Hostages. What is real? 8:15 Intermission 8:45 Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu 6-9 FMP:Fumoffu is the lighter-hearted sequel series to Full Metal Panic, and since it's both hilarious and essentially plotless, we like to insert episodes into the schedule whenever we can. Don't be concerned if you haven't seen any earlier episodes of either series. Episode 6 : "Excessive War Cry" The school rugby team is the laughingstock of the league, so military-minded Sousuke is brought in to help them regain their killer instincts. Parody elements of the sports-anime genre abound. Episode 7 : "A Goddess Arrives in Japan (Chapter of Suffering)" At long last, the appearance of one of the characters from the original Full Metal Panic, the bishoujo submarine commander Tessa Testarossa. Episode 8 : "A Goddess Arrives in Japan (Hot Springs Chapter)" The inevitable hot-springs episode. The boys mount a paramilitary mission to sneak a peek at the ladies' bath, which is defended with maximum force by Sousuke. Note: some nudity, as might be expected. Episode 9: "Dishonorable Fantasy" The return of Bonta-kun! The crew is drawn into the underworld of the yakuza, who need a little help in not getting into fights -- and losing badly -- all the time. Fumo fumo FUMO fuu fumomo MOFU fumo! 10:20 King of Bandit Jing 8-10 Episode 8: "Don't Drop the Por Vora!" While hunting for the "Systema Solari", Jing and Kir are roped into transporting strange, explosive (but cute!) animals named por voras across the Milky Way. Tailed by yet another beautiful woman, Jing and Kir travel to the town of Sangria, where the por voras are used as living dynamite in the mines. Episode 9: The Musical Island of Coco Oco After a disagreement, Jing and Kir take separate paths to explore the island of Coco Oco. Eventually reuniting through the influence of a lonely young woman, will they finally learn the secret of Coco Oco's treasure? Episode 10: The Lullaby of the Por Vora The cute, cuddly, lethal por voras are back! This time the Bandit King & Co. end up in Bluwari, the homeland of these explosive creatures. There they meet the mysterious Elixir, who has dedicated her life to protecting what por voras she can. But when Elixir's sanctuary is breached, Jing must save them and Elixir - by stealing her fate itself! * R.O.D. writeup thanks to David Mankins. Jing writeup thanks to Ali-chan. Fumoffu writeup thanks to Ed.
