This is also the first week in a while we're showing a sampler. It's sure to please so stay to the end. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- July 6th Showing (ie. 4th of July Weekend) Recognizing that a lot of people might have plans for this weekend we've decided not to show our summer series next week. Instead, we have a mix of other good things to show that will give those staying something interesting to watch while not messing up the storyline for people who want to do fun July 4th type stuff. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Paprika showing at the Kendall Cinema Satoshi Kon's latest film, Paprika, is currently playing at the Kendall Square Cinema. Consult the theatre's website [1] for showtimes and ticket prices. The movie is subtitled, and is scheduled for screenings through at least July 5th. From our May 18 showing announcement: 29 year old, Dr. Atsuko Chiba is an attractive but modest Japanese research psychotherapist whose work is on the cutting edge of her field. Her alter-ego is a stunning and fearless 18 year old "dream detective," code named PAPRIKA, who can enter into people's dreams and synchronize with their unconscious to help uncover the source of their anxiety or neurosis. At Atsuko's lab, a powerful new psychotherapy devise known as the "DC-MINI" has been invented by her brilliant colleague, Dr. Tokita, a nerdy genius who is rather too fond of his food. Although this state-of-art devise could revolutionize the world of psychotherapy, in the wrong hands the potential misuse of the devise could be devastating, allowing the user to completely annihilate the dreamer's personality while they are asleep. When one of the only four existing DC-MINI prototypes is stolen in the final stages of research, and simultaneously Dr. Tokita's research assistant, Himuro, goes missing, Atsuko suspects it's not a coincidence. Several of the remaining researchers at the lab start to go mad, dreaming while in their waking states, haunted by a Japanese doll which featured heavily in the dreams of one of Himuro's schizophrenic patients. Atsuko now knows for certain that the DC MINI is being used to destroy people's minds. She fears that not only will the government refuse to sanction the use of the machine for psychotherapy purposes when it becomes public, but whoever is manipulating the machines has a more evil purpose in mind. The teachers at her new school mistake her for a slacker because they think her red hair is the result of dye, while her parents think her refusal to dye her red hair black is a sign of rebelliousness. That's bad enough, but lately she's been tormented by strange dreams that leave her with a sense of dread. The dreams turn to reality one day during a break between classes. An oddly dressed stranger confronts her in the classroom and implores her to accept his service. Before he can explain, the windows shatter and the school is under attack by monsters. Youko is herself possessed by a spirit that lets her wield a sword in defense. Within minutes Youko and two of her classmates find themselves swept away to another world, where the attacks continue, and their guide is separated from them. Alone in a strange world, will they be able to master their destinies? With character designs from Akihiro Yamada, character designer for RahXephon, and the voice talent of Aya Hisakawa as Youko. 9:20 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 23-26 We showed a sample of this series in the fall and we're going to show all of it over the summer. Most of the time we try to avoid popular US releases, as we believe they have enough exposure already, but this show is good and deserves to be shown in it's entirety. Major Motoko Kusanagi and the other variously cyber-enhanced members of Public Security Section 9 solve crimes and keep order with a combination of quick wits, hacking skills, and superior firepower. The TV series has a separate continuity from the movies or the manga, but includes all of your favorite characters, including AI mini-tanks like the manga's that didn't make the cut for the movie. 11:05 Darker than Black 1-2 Ten years ago, a strange structure called "Hell's Gate" appeared in Tokyo. At the same time, "Contractors" appeared - cold-blooded killers with special powers and special obeisances they must perform after using those powers. Police detective Misaki Kirihara works to solve contractor-related crimes, and to track down the contractor known as BK201, who is killing other contractors. A noir feel and exciting action makes this recent Japanese premiere a natural accompaniment to our main semester series. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
