MIT Anime Club Showing #514 Friday 28 September 2007 Fall Showing #4 Note: this showing is in room 6-120 at 7:00PM 7:10 Queen Emeraldas 1-2 8:10 Mahoromatic 1-2 9:00 Intermission 9:30 Paniponi Dash! 5-10 *********************************************************************** Contents: Membership Pizza New Pizza Ordering Procedure Library Silence Programme ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Fall Showing #4 This week I'll actually right something different than the previous two weeks, as is the usual convention which I had not meant to disrupt. Still, the idea is the same, you come to 6-120, indulge in what we think are fairly good shows, and if you're hungry, maybe it some pizza. For you Paniponi Dash! fiends you'll be delighted to hear that we have a whopping 6 episodes for you to feast upon. Please keep the fan mail to a minimum. Of course, our samplers this week can be defined as nothing less than ageless classics so even if you hate Paniponi Dash! you should still come. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Is your club membership expiring this August? Renew now for uninterrupted member privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we first tested a few weeks ago: we'll sell tokens after the second episode of Queen Emeraldas (about 8:10) that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Feta Cheese - Pastrami - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Buffalo Grilled Chicken - Hamburger - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The library is running as usual this week, and the recent sampler DVD+RW is still available. If your membership expired in August, you'll need to renew it before picking up items. For the best service, send your requests to anime-library@mit.edu by the day before the showing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence Don't talk during the anime, or you will be permanently shushed by one of two extremely dangerous maids. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Queen Emeraldas 1-2 In a far distant future a would-be master race seeks to dominate the galaxy. Against these merciless Afressians, mankind has just one hope: the mysterious female warrior known as Emeraldas. Driven by the tortured memory of her lost love, Emeraldas sails the Sea of Stars like a privateer of old, blasting forces of tyranny into atoms with an amazing array of futuristic weapons. But when the devious Commander Eldomain kidnaps a group of innocent civilians, Emeraldas is drawn into a deadly trap from which even she may not escape! State of the art computer animation techniques bring Leiji Matsumoto's (Star Blazers) most famous creations to stunning life in Queen Emeraldas! 8:10 Mahoromatic 1-2 A 2001 series from Gainax (the anime-fan studio that brought us _Evangelion_, _FLCL_, _Kare Kano_, and _Gurren Lagann_). Mahoromatic tells the story of a battle droid whose heroics win her a year doing anything she wants to do. What she chooses is to be the maid of a teenage orphan. 9:30 Paniponi Dash! This series is directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, and displays a number of his characteristic animation tricks --- not the least of which is a frenetic pace and random events that require almost a frame-by-frame examination to catch all the references and jokes. Before this series was licensed, one fansub group released their subs accompanied by multi-page PDF (http://ggkthx.org/pdfs/) files containing commentary on the things that appear on the screen. * ep 5 Off on a class camping expedition. Rei makes a Chinese feast using stone knives and bear claws. Becky complains that a teacher shouldn't have to do any of the work. Ichijou becomes yet more mysterious --- even waving to the aliens that are observing from space. * ep 6 Becky sets up a research lab in the school, more or less as a means of getting some time to herself. This does not work, of course, because Rei replaces the "do not enter" sign with "Becky's counseling center", which brings all the students by to ask for her advice. Becky complains that a teacher shouldn't ahve to do such work. The research lab is in an abandoned room in *an abandoned school building*. There is something "living" above the ceiling. Do not open that trap door. * ep 7 An onsen episode! Not really. Becky loses at jan-ken-pon with the other teachers, so the star members of 1-C-gumi have to clean the pool. Becky complains that a teacher shouldn't have to do any of the work. In this episode, we meet Ichijou's little (most of the time) sister. * ep 8 Behoimi confronts her true nature as a magical girl. First, she resorts to the (Negima-like) ruse that, if anyone sees her using her magic, she must return to the Magical Kingdom. As her situation grows more desperate, Rei and Ichijou use their (genuine, it seems) magical powers to turn Behoimi into a genuine magical heroine. The other members of the 1-C gumi weep that, since they've seen her at magical work, Behoimi now has to leave... * ep 9 An onsen episode! Not really. Becky gets a letter from her old professor/mentor who is doing an archaeological dig on an island near Japan. Unbeknownst to Becky, many of the members of 1-C-gumi have been invited along. Not much archaeology happens, but we learn about Becky's life as a solitary genius at MIT. We also meet Media, the professor's assistant, who masks her secret-agent ultra-competence with a veneer of ditzy-cute. * ep 10 Media is now a student. She and Behoimi have a history of opposing secret identities. The former enemies find themselves forced to overcome their mutual distrust and combine their talents to disarm a collection of bombs that have been scattered around the school. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
