We sandwich our semester semester series (which of course you already know is great) between two awesome samplers. The first is a classic; the second, fresh off the block. No matter what your interests your sure to enjoy this weeks showing, so don't miss it! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive In late september, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karaoke Karaoke will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007. Time will likely be 2-5pm, room TBA. All are welcome. If you have a special request or two, please fill out a request form (available at the showing or at http://web.mit.edu/anime/Events/karaoke_Dec07.pdf) and drop it off at a showing or during office hours. You may also e-mail your requests to anime-inquiry at mit.edu. Songs will be timed, and romaji lyrics provided. Whenever possible, the karaoke or instrumental versions of songs will be used. Requests are due by October 28. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Business meeting Tuesday, 7pm The club's next regular business meeting will be this upcoming Tuesday, October 16th, at 7pm. Come help us decide which series to sample at future showings, which Geneon DVDs to buy, and more. Watch the web site for a location once it's determined, or email anime-inquiry to be added to the meeting announcement mailing list ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ADV club discount The club is affiliated with ADV Films' "Anime ADVocates" program. Besides a newsletter and sampler DVDs you can borrow from the library (under Miscellaneous), this also entitles you to a discount at the ADV online store, recently increased to 40% off non-sale items. Please e-mail anime-inquiry at mit.edu to obtain the code; you'll need to enter it as a coupon code When ordering. http://www.advfilms.com/shop.aspx Though if you happen to be in the market for ADV products right now, you might also want to check out the sale running through this Sunday at RightStuf: http://www.rightstuf.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in August? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we first tested a few weeks ago: we'll sell tokens after the second episode of Master Keaton (about 8:00) that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Pastrami (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Buffalo Grilled Chicken - Hamburger - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Feta cheese - Pastrami ----------------------------------------------------------------------- New Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library With the fall season of new anime shows starting this month, we have a digisub sampler DVD+RW with one episode each of a bunch of new shows. As always these are not intended to be playable in stand-alone DVD players: they're intended for computers, like our CD-Rs, but have a higher capacity. There may be some last minute additions, but this week's sampler will contain at least: Bamboo Blade 1 Blue Drop ~Tenshitachi no Gikyoku~ 1 Clannad 1 Dragonaut the Resonance 1 ef -a tale of memories. 1 GR -Giant Robo- [January] 1 Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun 1 Gundam 00 1 (Tobaku Mokushiroku) Kaiji 1 Kimikiss Pure Rouge 1 Mokke 1 Myself; Yourself 1 Night Wizard -The Animation- 1 Rental Magica 1 Shugo Chara 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If you talk during the anime, Becky will hide behind the curtain. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Master Keaton 1-4 Welcome to this comprehensive story of the goings and comings of an insurance agent. If you've ever been in a car wreck you know how exciting dealing with insurance agents can be. One minute you're filling out forms, the next, he's protecting you from roving bands of well-armed thugs out to steal your secret treasure. Or maybe he's rescuing your friends from the clutches of terrorists. The last time I went (nasty little fender bender), the agent was a essential part of me escaping from the Russian Mafia. What's that you say? Your agent hasn't done any of those things. My first advice to you is to find a better insurance agent. My second is to come watch Master Keaton. A mild mannered insurance agent travels around the world saving the day by relying on a skill set develeoped in his mysterious past. 9:20 Paniponi Dash! 11-14 Becky Miyamoto is a child prodigy. She has returned to Japan from America to be a schoolteacher and to save the world. About halfway through the first episode you'll see why we're showing this manic melange of pop-culture references. Featuring the voice talent of Chiwa Saito (Lavie Hedd in "Last Exile", Anita King in "R.O.D. TV"). From the director of "Tsukiyomi Moon Phase" (Nekomimi modo desu!), "Soul Taker", and "Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko". This series is directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, and displays a number of his characteristic animation tricks --- not the least of which is a frenetic pace and random events that require almost a frame-by-frame examination to catch all the references and jokes. Before this series was licensed, one fansub group released their subs accompanied by multi-page PDF (http://ggkthx.org/pdfs/) files containing commentary on the things that appear on the screen. 11:05 Oh! Edo Rocket 1-2 In 1840s Tokyo, frivolous forms of entertainment such as plays and fireworks have been banned. Fireworks maker Seikichi Tamaya can't give up on his passion, though, so he sets them off on the sly and so often finds himself on the run from the magistrate. The large cast also includes a number of other eccentric craftsmen who live in the same block of row-houses, mysterious special agents in black, and some weird looking monsters. But Seikichi's life really gets interesting when an unusual-looking girl named Sora shows up and asks him to build a firework that can reach the moon. This 26-episode series, which just finished airing in Japan, adapts a play first performed by the Gekkidan Shinkansen troop. As you can perhaps tell from the premise, this isn't meant as a faithful historical re-creation: sci-fi elements and pieces of present day life are mixed in with intentional anachronism. It's done in much the same spirit as in Samurai Champloo, but here more often in a hit-and-run fashion than an extended riff. And the opening theme is pop rather than hip-hop. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
