Other than Paniponi, we'll be giving you a a delightful selection this Friday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Maddness at Mokubo!!! Be an Usher!! If you haven't heard by now, you've been living under a rock. The live action anime performance of a lifetime will be happening this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday starting at 7:30 PM in Kresge Auditorium. Heres a Synopsis: The stage is set for the finals of the giant robot contest at the Mokuba Institute of Technology. But as the two teams prepare for battle, a strange disease called VIRTIGO is sweeping the school, causing unpredictable reality slippages. And it's getting worse. Does it have something to do with Homeland Security's suspicious arrest of undocumented workers? Can our heroes solve the mystery of VIRTIGO, help the workers, and . . . find love? So if you can, go see the show. But not on Friday, then you should come to our showing. Finally, since seats are bound to go quickly, if you want to help out plus not miss the show you should volunteer to be an usher. Remember, it's only an hour long, so why not? If interested contact, Diane Brainerd at dianeeb@mit.edu. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Membership Cards If you think you should have a membership card and have been waiting for one, perhaps now is your day. We have nearly ever back card ready. If you asked for it to be mailed to you, we'll do that soon. If you said you'd pick it up you should do that now. There's a small chance that yours might not be done yet, so if you want to double check just send an email to anime-inquiry at mit.edu. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karaoke Dec 1st, 4-270 2-5pm If you want to come sing your heart out, now's your chance. Even if you didn't request songs, we have plenty so I recommend you come and try stuff out even if you're nervous or unsure. Plus, there will be snacks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in August? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we first tested a few weeks ago: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Feta cheese - Pastrami - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Buffalo Grilled Chicken - Hamburger - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) The feature topping could be different because we're trying a new place. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The last two digisub samplers introduced almost all the new shows from the fall season, so this one and the next will mainly give the second episodes for series for which previous samplers had only one. As always these are not intended to be playable in stand-alone DVD players: they're intended for computers, like our CD-Rs, but have a higher capacity. This week's sampler will contain: Clannad 1-2* ef -a tale of memories. 1-2* GR -Giant Robo- [January] 1-2* Ghost Hound 1-2* (Tobaku Mokushiroku) Kaiji 1-2* Kimikiss Pure Rouge 1-2* Maple Story* 1-2 Mokke 1-2* Moyashimon 1-2* Myself; Yourself 1-2* Shugo Chara 1-2* (Asterisks indicate whether the series is completely new this time around, or what's new is more episodes) You can request one of these DVD+RWs in the normal way, but since we need to burn them in advance, supplies will be limited for requests made at the last minute. The discs are counted separately from the other limits on borrowing, but you should only ever have one out at once (we won't keep old ones circulating, since we want to reuse the discs). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If you feel the need to comment to your neighbors during the showing, please do so by holding up a notebook page you've written on in magic marker, rather than by speaking. We don't want to have to send our team of shogi-themed assassins after your loved ones. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Shion no Ou 1-4 Shion Yasuoka was only 4 when her parents were brutally murdered in front of her, and she hasn't spoken since that day. After a neighbor family took her in, she learned to play shogi (a Japanese game related to chess) from her foster father, and turned out to be quite good: at only 11, she's playing in tournaments with players twice her age and close to turning pro. Memories of her past still haunt her though, as she has a series of threatening encounters, and her rivals have secrets of their own. Hikaru no Go this isn't. Some games are shown in detail, complete with dramatic "putting a piece on the board" shots, but the main story is a dark, creepy, and sometimes bloody murder mystery. Based on a manga of the same name by Naoko Hayashiba (under the pen name Katori Masaru), who was a shogi player herself in her younger days, but left the game after a highly publicized sex scandal and is now a prolific author of light novels. Shion's character design, muteness (save occasional inner monologues) and victimhood add a moe aspect, but she's a strong character who carries the show on her own without relying on any viewer-surrogate males for protection. 9:20 Pani Poni Dash! 23-26 (Concludes) Becky Miyamoto is a child prodigy. She has returned to Japan from America to be a schoolteacher and to save the world. About halfway through the first episode you'll see why we're showing this manic melange of pop-culture references. Featuring the voice talent of Chiwa Saito (Lavie Hedd in "Last Exile", Anita King in "R.O.D. TV"). From the director of "Tsukiyomi Moon Phase" (Nekomimi modo desu!), "Soul Taker", and "Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko". This series is directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, and displays a number of his characteristic animation tricks --- not the least of which is a frenetic pace and random events that require almost a frame-by-frame examination to catch all the references and jokes. Before this series was licensed, one fansub group released their subs accompanied by multi-page PDF (http://ggkthx.org/pdfs/) files containing commentary on the things that appear on the screen. 11:05 Night Wizard Night wizard is another new show to Japan this fall, and it's not as cheesy as its name might imply. If you imagine a classic scenario featuring a team of people with special abilities fighting monsters and savign the world form a deep and dark evil, then you've imagined this show. The plot revolves around a few highschool students who all have the special ability to fight off monsters who are constantly trying to invade our world. The interesting twist that comes into play here however is the well done mix in of comedic effects which at least we laughed at. Take the classic save the world recipe, mix in some unwilling participants and well contrived random humour, and we think you're in for a treat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
