So, this semester we had more Fridays than we usually have and the consequence is that we have an extra week to show you things. Others might consider this an extra burden that we'd resent, but not this dedicated anime club. Around the office we've taken to calling this week, "Bonus Week." In the bonus spirit, we're going to do things we don't usually do. First, we're going to show a live action move, Linda Linda Linda, which you will certainly enjoy, followed by an episode of the acclaimed, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, in order to show you the similarities between that episode and the aforementioned movie. Finally, we bring you one of Studio Ghibli's new films, yet to be released in the US, Gedo Senk (Tales from Earthsea). It's directed by Miyazaki's son, Goro, and if your a fan of the studio you should come watch it. Next week is Brain Reset, so be sure to come then in order to get ready for the oppressive time MIT calls finals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in August? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we first tested a few weeks ago: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Feta cheese (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Pastrami - Sausage - Grilled Chicken - Buffalo Grilled Chicken - Hamburger - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Feta cheese The feature topping could be different because we're trying a new place. The ordering time for pizza will be at the beginning of the showing. This is to prevent stopping "Linda Linda Linda" in the middle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The library is running as usual this week, and the recent sampler DVD+RW is still available. If your membership expired in August, you'll need to renew it before picking up items. For the best service, send your requests to anime-library@mit.edu by the day before the showing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence Be silient or the dark magic will swallow you whole. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Linda Linda Linda live action movie Kei Tachibana was getting ready to play guitar at her final high school festival when her band imploded: the guitarist broke her fingers, and Kei and the vocalist have a falling-out over the possibility of a replacement. Still wanting to play, she scraps together a new band with other friends Kyoko and Nozomi on drums and bass. They plan to play covers of the (real) late 1980s Japanese punk band The Blue Hearts, and for vocals they recruit Korean exchange student Son, though given her limited command of Japanese, she probably didn't know what she was getting into. With just days left before the festival, can they really get it together in time? Though some of the conventions of Japanese high-school life will be familiar to anime fans, this film's earnest relationships and understated comedy owe more to the spirits of punk rock and independent film (it played widely at international festivals). Also, it's only fair to warn you may have difficulty getting the music out of your head. In case you're keeping track of such things, note that "Linda Linda" (2 Lindas) is the title one of the a hit Blue Hearts song sung in the movie, "Linda Linda Linda" (3 Lindas) is the title of the film, and the each chorus of the song has 10 Lindas. 9:35 The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 12 ("Live Alive") The series probably doesn't require introduction, but just in case: on the first day of high school, Haruhi Suzumiya says by way of introduction that she isn't interested in normal people, but if there are any aliens, time travelers, or ESPers in the class she'd like to talk with them. No one volunteers, but our haplessly normal narrator Kyon is recruited by Haruhi for a new club devoted to searching out and investigating strange happenings. In the ensuing hijinks, it comes out that Haruhi may be getting exactly what she wished for. We played this whole series in the summer of last year, but there's a tie-in with the first movie of the night that gives us an excuse to bring back this school festival episode. You're sure to recognize it when you see it. 11:05 Gedo Senki While you might not have heard of this move, you've surely heard of the famous Stuio Ghibli. This is the newest move to come out of that studio and we bet you haven't seen it yet. We have a high quality R2 release of it and we're showing it Friday, so if you liked "Howl's Moving Castle," "Spirited Away," "Princess Mononoke," or any of the other now famous movies Miyazaki produced, I urge you to come down and see his son Goro nearly match his father with a creative story and beautiful art. The basis of this movie has many of the same themes as the ones before it. Disrupting the balance of life is bad, protecting life is good, redemption is always possible, and so forth. This may sound formulaic, but if you've ever seen a Ghibli move this doesn't equate to boring or bad. It's in a classic fantasy setting, invented by Ursula Guin in her Earthsea series. The story follows a troubled young prince, on his quest to find himself and escape his troubles. Along the way he discovers a mage who's magic and kindness saves his life, a girl who needs his help, and a deceitful dark wizard who is in the midst of an attempt to gain eternal life. What results is an interesting jaunt through a unique world, one which upholds the Stuio Ghibli standard with pride. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
