Plus just to make things more interesting we have a bit of Gundam 00, a new and really good Gundam series which premiered last fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anime Essentials: 1/30, 7:30pm Later this month, we'll be running an IAP event aimed at newer anime fans. We'll be showing single episodes of shows from a variety of genres, to give a taste of what's out, particularly for potential fans who haven't seen much (or much variety of) anime. If you're a regular at our Friday showings, it'll probably be old hat, but tell your on-the-fence friends, so that in the future when you say something is "moe" they'll know what you're talking about. The showing will start at 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 30th, in room 35-225, and will run until a little before midnight. Watch our website for a detailed schedule of what we're showing. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in August? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Grilled Chicken (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Buffalo Grilled Chicken - Hamburger - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Feta cheese - Pastrami - Salami - Sausage ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library January marks a new season of anime in Japan, but we're still a bit behind; this sampler just clears the deck from the fall season with two-episode helpings of series that previously just got one. To tell the truth, these are the series that your librarian thought were the "bottom half" of the season, but everyone's tastes differ, so maybe you'll find a buried treasure here. Look for another sampler with new series in a week or two. As always these are not intended to be playable in stand-alone DVD players: they're intended for computers, like our CD-Rs, but have a higher capacity. This week's sampler will contain: Dragonaut the Resonance 1-2 Goshuushousama Ninomiya-kun 1-2 Juushin Enbu 1-2 Kawaii! Jenny 1-2 Kodomo no Jikan 1-2 Koutetsushin Jeeg [April] 1-2 Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro 1-2 Night Wizard -The Animation- 1-2 Prism Ark 1-2 Rental Magica 1-2 You can request one of these DVD+RWs in the normal way, but since we need to burn them in advance, supplies will be limited for requests made at the last minute. The discs are counted separately from the other limits on borrowing, but you should only ever have one out at once (we won't keep old ones circulating, since we want to reuse the discs). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence Did you know that one of the club's officer's dead sister was a skilled swordswoman who pledged her life to defend anime watchers from distraction? Keep quiet during the showing if you don't want to find out who. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Le chevalier D'Eon 1-6 ADVISORY: This series has some depictions of life like violence featuring a lot of blood. Well, it's pretty life like, as life like as zombie killing will ever be. Anyway, be warned that it might be a tad be messy at times. During the time when Louis XV still ruled France, a certain woman was found dead in the coffin floating through the Seine river. D'Eon, the woman's brother, determines to seach for the killer of his sister, Lia. But there are some strange movements in France. And things become more strange when Lia's soul enters D'Eon's body... 10:15 (Mobile Suit) Gundam 00 1-4 It's 2307 AD. Fossil fuels are being replaced with power from equatorial space elevators, and world politics is dominated by three superpower alliances: the World Economic Union, the Advanced European Union, and the Human Reform League. There's still plenty of war, though, with skirmishes involving the remaining independent states and an arms race between the big three based on armored mobile suits. But then things are really shaken up by the appearance of Celestial Being, a secretive organization dedicated to eliminating armed conflict through the deployment of superior firepower. Their key weapon? A family of mobile suits so awesome, they could only be called "Gundam". These are piloted by an elite corps of angsty young men with odd-sounding names, the Gundam Meisters. This latest reboot of the Gundam metaseries (read "double-oh") is the first to be set on a world that's recognizably our Earth, in our calendar, and you'll recognize some of the countries that are mentioned. But it still has all the trappings of Gundam: complex politics, anti-war (or at least reluctant) warrior heros, and of course giant robot action. The staff is all-star, though for many their first Gundam show: director Seiji Mizushima (Fullmetal Alchemist), character designer Yun Koga (Loveless), screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda (Madlax, R.O.D the TV), and an opening theme by L'Arc-en-Ciel, among others. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
