While some of you may have expected to see Le Chevalier, we've had to cancel our showing of it, since ADV informed us that they can't give us permission to show it at this time (without saying why). Hopefully, we'll be able to finish it in the future. But, all is not lost, this week and next week, we'll be showing the entirety of a good show known as Baccano!. If you liked Chevalier, you'll probably like this, so don't fear. And of course we have another good show to sample for you in the later part of our showing; don't miss it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anime Essentials: 1/30, 7:30pm Later this month, we'll be running an IAP event aimed at newer anime fans. We'll be showing single episodes of shows from a variety of genres, to give a taste of what's out, particularly for potential fans who haven't seen much (or much variety of) anime. If you're a regular at our Friday showings, it'll probably be old hat, but tell your on-the-fence friends, so that in the future when you say something is "moe" they'll know what you're talking about. The showing will start at 7:30pm on Wednesday, January 30th, in room 35-225, and will run until a little before midnight. For a detailed schedule and other information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/Showings/essentials-2008.shtml ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ADV Sale at RightStuf Online retailer RightStuf.com recently announced the return of one of their most aggressively discounted sales: a long list of DVDs from ADV Films are selling for $5 or $4 each, as long as you buy them in batches (10 for $50 or 25 for $100, with economy shipping included). As of Thursday night, many of the most desirable titles had already sold out, but on past experience, some will be restocked before the sale's February 6th end date. The web site is http://www.rightstuf.com/ (note, only one "f"). ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in August? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Hamburger (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Bacon - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Feta cheese - Pastrami - Salami - Sausage - Grilled Chicken ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The digisub sampler DVD+RW from last week is still available. DVD volumes 4, 5, and 6 of Le Chevalier D'Eon, containing the episodes we didn't get to show, are circulating in the library in case you can't wait to see how the series ends. However, given the potential demand, we'll apply different rules to them than normal checkouts. You can only have one of the three DVDs out at once (though you can borrow an unrelated DVD at the same time), and you need to return it within 7 days, rather than 18. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence While baccano may be Italian for noisy, that doesn't mean you can be. I'd hate to see what would happen to the person who tried to test this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Baccano! 1-6 1930s America is a time and place plagued with economic depression and the shadows of warring mafia families. A bumbling duo of thieves, conflicting mafia groups with paper-thin alliances, a gang of juvenile delinquents, and even a handful of secretive immortals and alchemists all become involved in a series of seemingly unrelated separate plot lines which spiral out of control in a beautifully orchestrated collision. "Baccano" is an Italian word for a nonsensical ruckus, which is appropriate. The events are portrayed completely non-chronologically. The first few episodes, for instance, are structured around giving each of a series of characters their moment in the sun, a common structure for anime meant to appeal to fans of an original work too extensive to adapt in full (in this case, a long-running series of light novels). But we're planning to show the whole thing, so it'll make more sense as we go on. The episode titles give a taste of what you're in for: ep 1: The Assistant Editor Refuses to Discuss the Possibility that he is the Main Character ep 2: Despite the Old Woman's Anxieties the Trans-Continental Train Pulls Out ep 3: Randy and Pezzo are Busy Getting Ready for the Party ep 4: Ladd Russo Likes to Talk a Lot, and to Kill a Lot ep 5: Jacuzzi Splot Cries, Cowers, and Shows His Mettle ep 6: The Rail Tracer Maneuvers Through the Train, Slaughtering Many Like the Le Chevalier D'Eon, the series it's standing in for, this series takes a western historical setting, and mixes in some supernatural powers and a some often-bloody violence. Engaging characters in a fresh and unique setting, combined with suspenseful storytelling, smooth animation and a highly appealing soundtrack all make this greatly underrated series exciting and entertaining. 10:15 Myself; Yourself 1-4 Sana Hidaka had to move away from his idyllic seaside home town when he was 11, but now five years later he's returning alone for high school. Though some things have changed, his childhood friends still remember him. In fact one of them, Nanaka Yatsushiro, seems like she's been hanging on to some romantic feelings for him, though things get off to a bad start when he fails to recognize her. And Sana is at the age where he starts to see his other female friends in a different light, as well. The childhood friend is a stock character in shonen romances; this series distinguishes itself by all the main love interests being childhood friends. There are moments of broad harem-style ero-comedy, but the dominant theme here is romantic angst, true to the title's roots as a visual novel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
