Have no fear, we'll be delivering another fun action packed night of great anime so that you can get your usual good anime fix. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geneon going-out-of-business DVD donation drive So if you've been thinking about sponsoring a disc but haven't now's your chance, what better way to prove your love for a series than buying it for us. ^^ In late September, it was announced that Geneon, one of the largest US anime companies, is getting out of the DVD sales business. Unfortunately, there were still a lot of DVDs we wanted to buy from them! To supplement our normal acquisitions budget of money from the UA, memberships, and refreshments, we're also asking for your help in picking up good series that might be going away for good. For more information, see: http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/donations/geneon-oob-2007.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Karaoke Karaoke is back, and will be held on Saturday, May 3 this time around. It'll likely run from 2-5pm, room TBA. All are welcome. If you have a special request or two, please fill out a request form (available at th= e showing or at http://web.mit.edu/anime/Events/karaoke_May08.pdf) and drop it off at tonight's showing. You may also e-mail your requests to anime-inquiry at mit.edu by midnight on Friday. Songs will be timed an= d romaji lyrics provided. Whenever available, the karaoke or instrumenta= l versions of songs will be used. This is your last chance to make a special request; we've got plenty of songs from previous karaoke events= , so you're welcome to join in the party in May even if you didn't ask fo= r a specific song this time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Did your club membership expire in January? Renew now for continued library checkouts and other membership privileges. Or start a new membership for the term, the year, or a longer period. Ask for a form at the showing or print it in advance from our web site at: http://web.mit.edu/anime/register/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza We'll be using the same token-based pizza sales system we have been using for awhile: we'll sell tokens two episodes before intermission that you can exchange for slices during intermission. This week's pizza options are: $1.50 Plain cheese $2.00 Pepperoni $2.00 Sausage (this week's feature flavor) Future weeks will feature: - Grilled Chicken - Hawaiian (ham + pineapple) - Hamburger - Sausage ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Pizza Ordering Procedure To bring you a more reliable pizza experience, we're going to be taking orders using a new procedure. Instead of taking a poll on the blackboard and then selling slices for cash, we'll sell tokens early in the evening which can be exchanged for slices during intermission. If there are extra slices, we'll sell tokens for them at intermission, but advance orders will get priority. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Library The library is open for checkouts as usual this week. We can serve you best if you email requests by Thursday, but there's still time for last-minute requests. Speaking of which, there will be a substitute librarian at two showings later this month (the 18th and 25th), which will mean you'll need to get requests in earlier: we won't be able to honor any that arrive after 4pm. So get into the habit of requesting promptly now. The digisub sampler DVD+RW from the end of January is still available. Our first sampler with shows from the April season in Japan will appear later this month, probably either the 11th or the 25th depending on how busy Stephen is. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Silence If you talk during the anime, you will be found and dealt with by Satchii. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Programme 7:10 Kaiji 1-4 Kaiji Ito is a bit of a loser. He doesn't have a steady job, and spends most of his time gambling with his friends, not doing very well at that either. His other hobbies including stealing hood ornaments from parked cars. His real trouble comes, though, when he learns that he's responsible for a large debt on a loan he foolishly cosigned for an equally irresponsible friend. Lured by the chance to discharge this, he is conned into taking a special kind of gambling cruise on a ship called the Espoir. On board with a few hundred other people in similar situations, he is told the rules of a strange game they will play, and starts losing pretty badly at it, too. But this is anime, so maybe he'll turn out to have some skill that kicks in when he's in a really serious pinch. An adaptation by Madhouse of a Kodansha award-winning manga whose full name is Tobaku Mokushiroku ("Gambling Apocalypse") Kaiji. Besides the "gambling drama" plot style, rarely seen in anime or English-licensed manga, it's also distinctive for the angular art style, most notable in Kaiji's large nose. If you saw 2005's Akagi, about mahjong, this series is a close relation, with the same mangaka, studio, director, and even lead seiyu. 9:20 Dennou Coil 13-16 In the near future, virtual computer-generated objects coexist with real ones - if you're wearing cyberspace-enabled glasses. Yuuko Okonogi moves to Daikoku City with her parents, her little sister, and her cyberdog Densuke, and gets caught up in the strange events happening in that city's cyberspace. Everything about this series is well-done - the Miyazaki-esque artwork, the augmented-reality interfaces, the character interactions - and don't miss the Mojos. 11:05 Hatenkou Yuugi (Dazzle) 1-2 A young girl named Rahzel is booted out of her house one day by her father with the instructions to 'see the world.' And so her journey begins, However, she won't be doing it alone =85 for she befriends a stoic young man named Alzeido seeking revenge for his father's murder. Alzeido and Rahzel are like oil and water =85 but even still, they fee= l strangely drawn to one another. This could be either the result of an underlying attraction =97 or their shared powers with magic. And so, t= he two reluctant allies travel from town to town, using their powers to help the helpless, while discovering their own respective places in the world. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (This showing is made possible in part with funding from Finboard and the Undergraduate Association of MIT.)
